MADISON, Wis. -- College Library will be open 24 hours-a-day, seven days a week for the rest of the semester while students prepare for the end of classes and for exams. The library will remain open continuously until 4:45 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 23. Starting Saturday, Dec. 11, Memorial Library's west corridor and the adjoining study halls in rooms 116 and 124 will remain open 24 hours-a-day through Tuesday, Dec. 21.

"Toward the end of the semester, the libraries really fill to capacity with students working on final projects and studying for exams," said Carrie Kruse, director of College Library. "We're happy to accommodate this need by providing extended hours."

During the semester, College Library is typically open continuously from 10 a.m. Sunday to 11:45 p.m. Friday and again on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. The 24 hours-a-day, five nights a week hours were implemented during the Spring 2004 semester at the request of the Associated Students of Madison, UW-Madison's student government. A pilot program during the fall 2003 semester proved students would use the library during extended hours.

"Many of the best ideas for improving the UW–Madison Libraries come from our students," said Ken Frazier, director of UW-Madison Libraries.
