MADISON, Wis. -- Andrew Stevens, curator of prints, drawings and photographs at the Elvehjem Museum of Art, will speak about the historic relationship between wood engraving and the book arts in a lecture titled "Wood engraving, Illustration, and Art" on Thursday, Nov. 18, at 4:30 p.m. in 126 Memorial Library.

Originally created as a method of printing illustrations alongside text, wood engraving once enjoyed a prominent place in the book arts. Over time, wood engraving was gradually replaced by photographic illustration, and wood engravers were forced to explore new methods of expression. The development brought about the rise of extraordinary handmade books illustrated with the now-exalted craft of wood engraving, earning the medium its status as an art form in its own right.

Stevens will discuss the mechanics of wood engraving and the work of artists often overlooked in this aspect of the book arts. He will also show beautiful examples of wood engraving throughout the history of the book arts. His talk is sponsored by the Friends of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Library and is open to the public at no charge.
