New 'tool' creates citations, bibliography

MADISON, Wis. -- A new citation management tool, RefWorks, is available to help library patrons organize literature citations and create bibliographies. As a patron researches material using online databases, RefWorks collects citation information from selected articles to compile citations and create a bibliography.
This program is unique from other citation management software because it is based on the Internet, not a specific computer.
"RefWorks is a Web-based program, which allows users to access their information from any computer which can connect to the Internet," says Patricia Herrling of Steenbock Library. Herrling spearheads campus-wide implementation of RefWorks with Emily Wixson of Chemistry Library.
Because it is Web-based, the program can be used to gather citation information by many users for group research and collaboration.
Once the information is gathered, patrons can choose from more than 480 citation styles to create citations and a bibliography for various types of research, or make their own style.
UW–Madison Libraries will offer RefWorks for the next year on a trial basis. For more information, attend a Library and Information Literacy Instruction workshop or go to http://www.library.wisc.edu/instruction/refworks/.
