MADISON, Wis. -- A new digital resource allows users to dive into 200 years of British history with just a few clicks of a mouse. These valuable primary sources cover the War of 1812, part of Margaret Thatcher’s terms as prime minister and just about everything else in between—direct accounts from the journalists who wrote about them.
The Times (London) Digital Archive, a new database through the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries, allows UW students, faculty and staff to explore British history through a digital archive of The Times. The archive includes page facsimiles with more than 7.6 million articles from all issues of The Times from 1785 to 1985 online.
Users may search these valuable primary sources by keyword and narrow their searches by limiting their options to certain dates or specific categories such as news, advertising, editorials and commentaries, features and even photo galleries. Users may also browse an entire issue and e-mail or print the desired pages.
The Times ( London ) Digital Archive database is accessible only to UW-Madison students, faculty and staff with a valid ID card. The libraries also provide access to a similar historical database for issues of the New York Times from 1851 to 1999, which has been available since the summer of 2002.
