Posted 1/21/2004

MADISON, Wis.—The Friends of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries are seeking book, CD, and LP record donations for their 17th semiannual book sale to be held Wednesday through Saturday, March 3-6.

Donations are tax deductible. The Friends hope to offer more than 15,000 books on a variety of topics, including fiction, history, science, philosophy, political science, fine arts, religion, and women’s studies.

The sale, billed as the largest single used book sale in Wisconsin, helps support an annual lecture series, special purchases for the library collections, a visiting scholar program, various publications, and grants to campus libraries. The Friends are also major sponsors of the annual Wisconsin Book Festival. In 2003, they sold more than 14,700 books and raised more than $21,000 at each of two events.

Donations are reviewed by library staff for possible additions to the collections before distribution to the book sale.

The sale, which draws visitors from around the Midwest, will be held in 116 Memorial Library, 728 State St., and is open to the public. A preview sale with a $5 admission fee will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3.

The regular sale with no admission fee will be held 10:30 a.m.- 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday, March 4-5; and 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday. The Saturday sale will be a $2-a-bag sale, "bring your own bag."

Donated books can be left in "Open Return" book drops at most campus libraries or may be dropped off at the Lake Street dock of Memorial Library weekdays, 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. To arrange for pick-up, contact the Friends, (608) 265-2505, friends@library.wisc.edu.
