Parallel Press poets hold reading Oct. 23

MADISON, Wis.-- Twenty-three Parallel Press poets, most of whom have ties to Madison or to Wisconsin, will gather at A Room of One’s Own Bookstore Oct. 23 to read their works as a part of the second-annual Wisconsin Book Festival. Andrea Potos, author of The Perfect Day, will host the event, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Parallel Press, publisher of The Perfect Day, is an imprint of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries.

Poets include: Susan Elbe (Light Made from Nothing); Judy Strasser (Sand Island Succession: Poems of the Apostles); Robin Chapman (The Only Everglades in the World); Marilyn Annucci (Luck); Gwen Ebert (The Twig Songs); Mary Mercier (Small Acts); Jean Feraca (Rendered into Paradise); Alison Townsend (What the Body Knows); Charles Cantrell (Cicatrix); Heather Dubrow (Border Crossings); and Dennis Trudell (Marquees of Buffalo).

The Parallel Press publishes several books each year, including six poetry chapbooks. Tisha Turk's Getting Out Alive, the newest release, is its 27th poetry chapbook. The Wisconsin Book Festival, in its inaugural year, drew more than 8,000 people to Madison Oct. 9-13. This year’s festivities will run Oct. 22-26 throughout downtown Madison. Events include a book sale, a speech by former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins, sponsored by the UW-Madison Libraries, and many panels, discussions and speeches.

Presenters include: James Bradley, author of Flags of Our Fathers; Patricia McConnell, co-host of Calling All Pets, a nationally syndicated radio program; and Dan Savage, an internationally syndicated columnist whose work has appeared in The New York Times, Rolling Stone and The Onion.
