Changes coming in library e-reserves, fall 2003

Posted 8/14/2003

Access to course reserves posted by campus libraries will change this fall semester. The initiative moves the campus toward one-stop shopping for all course materials that students need, whether posted by the libraries or by instructors. MyUW will become the one point for easily navigating to all course resources.

The change also will align the campus better with the federal Copyright Law’s Fair Use provisions and other relevant legislation, primary reasons for the change in providing access for reserves.

With the widespread use of MyUW, the libraries now have the mechanism to protect their fair use right to post copyright-protected materials for classes, because access is limited to only those students currently enrolled in the course.

Although some instructors’ course reserves consist only of materials they have created, which may not require copyright restrictions, a single access point reduces confusion for students.
