Poems sweeter than wine
Posted 1/23/2002
MADISON, Wis. --This Valentine's Day, love poems will be sweeter than any glass of champagne, box of chocolates or vase of long-stem roses.
The Friends of the UW-Madison Libraries and College Library on campus will present the community's most notable members reading "Madison's Favorite Love Poems" 4:30-6 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 13, on the third floor of College Library, 600 N. Park St. Hosted by Ken Frazier, UW-Madison Libraries director, "Madison's Favorite Love Poems" will celebrate the sonnets, haikus and limericks that explore the most powerful human emotion: love.
The reading, based on former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky's "Favorite Poem Project," will feature people from all walks of life, including politicians, administrators, students, award-winning poets, journalists and others. Many of the invited guests will be reading poems available in the Gaus Collection in College Library. Attendees are also invited to bring a brief favorite love poem to share.
"Madison's Favorite Love Poems" will feature pieces that have made lasting impressions about love and romance on readers.
"We ask that the recited poems not be poems the readers have written, but ones they have read, perhaps many times, and to which they feel a personal attachment," Frazier said.
The event will include an open call for readers from the audience. After audience members have shared their favorite love poems, the invited guests will read.
