Parker J. PalmerMADISON --Educator, activist and author Parker J. Palmer will speak about how terrorism has renewed the interest to explore the power of higher education to form, or deform, our country's decision makers. Palmer's lecture, "The Violence of Our Knowledge: On Higher Education and Peace Making," will be from 3 to 5 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 29.

Palmer works independently on issues in education, community, leadership, spirituality, and social change. He has written several articles and books, including The Courage to Teach, a best-selling exploration of "the inner landscape of a teacher's life." He serves as senior associate of the American Association of Higher Education, senior advisor to the Fetzer Institute, and founder of the national Teacher Formation Program for K-12 teachers. In 1998, the Leadership Project, a national survey of 11,000 faculty and admninistrators, named Parker as one of the 30 "most influential senior leaders" in higher education.

The lecture is cosponsored by Creating a Collaborative Academic Environment (CCAE), the General Library System, Learning Technology and Distance Education (DoIT), the Teaching Academy, and the University Lectures Committee. Palmer's lecture will be held at the Memorial Union Theater, 800 Langdon St.
