Posted 7/9/2001

Cover of The Only Everglades in the WorldMADISON, Wis.-- Poet Robin Chapman guides readers through a journey of the Florida Everglades in The Only Everglades in the World, the latest chapbook release of the Parallel Press. Chapman's words reflect both a remarkable adventure and a disquieting odyssey in this 11-piece collection.

A chapbook is a small-format literary work, usually of poetry or essays. The chapbooks are published by the Parallel Press, an imprint of the UW-Madison libraries. This marks the 14th release for the press.

Chapman is a professor emerita in both the UW-Madison Department of Communicative Disorders and the Waisman Center, which is dedicated to research on human development and developmental disabilities.

Chapman is the author of four poetry collections: Distance, Rate, Time; Learning to Talk; the poetry CD, Banff Dreaming; and The Way In, which won the Council of Wisconsin Writers' 1999 Posner Award. Chapman has had numerous poems appear in literary journals including Poetry, The Hudson Review, The American Scholar, The Southern Review, and The Iowa Review.

Here's a sample poem from The Only Everglades in the World:

At Night in the Everglades

What pulled us out of the tent past midnight?
Perhaps the moon's absence called us out,
or the sky itself, empty of city light and full
of stars--as, camped on the chickee
with water surrounding us
on every side, we woke
to find the bay entirely still,
a glass, reflecting underfoot
even the littlest stars
of the clear sky overhead, so that we stood
in a world made entirely of stars
wheeling under our feet and above our heads,
naked, in the original world; only a dolphin's fin
traced a wavery line across the Milky Way.
