Sale offers 15,000 books March 22-25

Posted 3/9/2000

Visitor at Friends of UW-Madison Libraries book sale. MADISON, Wis.--More than 15,000 books on almost any subject and thousands of long-playing records will be put on sale in a fund-raiser for the Friends of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries, Wednesday through Saturday, March 22-25. This is the ninth semiannual sale sponsored by the Friends.

Subjects covered in the sale include: American studies, Eastern religion, fiction, foreign languages, cooking, physical and biological sciences, computer science, government, philosophy, political science, law, education, fine arts, self-help, reference, business, social sciences, religion, philosophy, women's studies, and history.

The materials are donated primarily by UW faculty, staff, students, and area residents. The public sale helps fund an annual lecture series, special purchases for the library collections, and a visiting scholar support program. In the past three years, nearly two dozen campus libraries received more than $54,000 through a specialized small-grant program supported by the book sales.

The sale is open to the public and will be held in room 124 of Memorial Library, 728 State Street.

A preview sale with a $5 admission fee will be held 5-9 p.m., Wednesday, March 22. The regular sale with no admission fee will be held 10:30 a.m.-7 p.m., Thursday and Friday, March 23-24; and 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, March 25. The Saturday sale will be a $2-a-bag sale (bring your own bag).

How to Donate Books

You may donate unwanted books by simply leaving them in the "Open Return" book drops at most campus libraries. They will be added to campus library collections, sold through the Friends book sale to benefit the libraries, or recycled.

All gifts of materials support the mission of libraries and are greatly appreciated. Hundreds of titles new to the collections, and within the libraries' collecting scope, are added through gifts annually.

For more information, contact the Friends (e-mail: friends@library.wisc.edu) or phone (608) 265-2505.
