James Madison: Champion of Liberty and Justice

MADISON, Wis. -- The Parallel Press has released the latest history chapbook, James Madison: Champion of Liberty and Justice, by UW-Madison history professor John P. Kaminiski. It provides contemporary accounts and perceptions of an individual who helped build the American Republic.

Detailing Madison's influence on the American political system, Kaminski includes excerpts from Madison's published essays and correspondence. By including commentary from those who worked closely with Madison, Kaminski creates an intimate depiction. Edward Coles, who served as Madison's secretary during his presidency says: "...his form, features, and manner were not commanding, but his conversation exceedingly so, and few men possessed so rich a flow of language, or so great a fund of amusing anecdotes, which were the more interesting from their being well timed and well told."

Tracing Madison's career from his entrance onto the national political scene at the end of the War for Independence through his retirement in 1817 and his death in 1836, Kaminski's chapbook shows the political career of one of the country's influential founders.

John P. Kaminski is the founder and director of the Center of Study of the American Constitution in the Department of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the author or co-author of 12 books on early American history. Kaminski is the author of the America's Founders series and James Madison: Champion of Liberty and Justice marks the third installment of the series.

America's Founders is a chapbook series published by the Parallel Press in collaboration with the Center for the Study of the American Constitution. The Parallel Press is an imprint of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Library.
