Honoring the Faculty: UW-Madison Tenure and Promotions

The UW-Madison Libraries' Honoring the Faculty program was first suggested by former UW-Madison Provost Peter Spear. Through this program, the libraries will add a book to the collection in the name of the UW-Madison faculty member who received tenure and/or promotion.

Promotion in rank is rightly viewed as a major achievement in the professional life of a faculty member. It is the culmination of years of work, representing excellence in research, teaching, and service to the university and to the wider community.

Honoring the FacultyThe Libraries initiated this program to celebrate faculty accomplishments and to recognize their contribution to the advancement of knowledge as recorded in the library collections of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Honoring the Faculty program was instituted during the 2004 academic year with the announcement of the newly promoted faculty.

The program invites promoted faculty members to choose a book for the collection and to have a bookplate placed in the book to commemorate their success. Faculty members were encouraged to select a book title representing something meaningful to them, either professionally or personally. Titles included books that informed their thinking or research; books they authored or co-authored; or in some instances, books that inspired them as children. Promoted faculty members were asked to fill out a brief form providing information about their book and were given the option of providing a statement describing why they chose that book. Alternatively, if they did not want to specify a book, they could choose a subject of interest, and a library selector would pick a book for them in that area.

Each bookplate has the faculty member's name, department, and year of selection. One caveat is that there may have been promotions—unknown to the UW-Madison Libraries—that were made after the spring announcements. We apologize for any promotions that may have been overlooked.

The book lists promoted and newly tenured faculty members along with titles of books selected in their honor was produced by the libraries with the help of University Communications Creative Services.
