NEWS
-
The UW-Madison Libraries has created a new section on its Web site devoted to providing copyright information for the campus.
The Web pages, available at http://www.library.wisc.edu/copyright or through the drop-down menu under the "Help & Guidance" section on the main library page, provide introductory educational information on issues of copyright related to library services, including reserves, interlibrary loan and document delivery, digital collections, and personal copyright.
Jaqui Alvarez, College Library Electronic Reserves supervisor; Peter Gorman, University of Wisconsin Digital Collections Center head; Deborah Helman, Wendt Library director; Judy Tuohy, InterLibrary Loan head; and Mary Williamson, Wisconsin Library Services, prepared the informative online guides.
The Web pages also include many links for more in-depth information on copyright issues, although UW-Madison Libraries plans to continue to expand on its own content in the future.
- The 2005-06 annual report for the libraries has been circulated electronically and can be read online.
- The WAAL Information Literacy Council is accepting nominations for the Fourth Annual Information Literacy Award through Jan. 12. The award recognizes a librarian or librarian-led team from any Wisconsin institution who has made innovative or significant contributions to advance information literacy. This year, the emphasis will be on a project or a program that shows tangible or demonstrable long-terms results; however, there are no restrictions as to the size of the instructional effort, discipline, target audience or techniques employed.
The award winner will present the winning information literacy contribution at the 2007 WAAL Conference from April 17-20 in the Wisconsin Dells. The winner will also receive one free registration for the WAAL Conference and its Wednesday luncheon and will be recognized there for the winning achievement.
Self nominations as well as thoughts from colleagues are encouraged. Prior nominees are also encouraged to apply. Click here to find out more about the award criteria and to access the online nomination form. The deadline for submission is Jan. 12.
- Mills Music Library is undergoing some remodeling this Winter Break and will be closed through Jan. 21. Staff will remain reachable by phone and e-mail, though due to the remodeling of certain areas, it is advised that during the first few weeks contact be conducted via e-mail.
- Wendt Library is the proud recipient of 25 pieces of framed artwork donated by Erdman Art Group with assistance from director Margaret LeMay. Most pieces have been hung on the 1st, 3rd and 4th floors of the library, and others will be featured in a new soft seating alcove on the 2nd floor, to be renovated next year.
In Fall 2005, more than 800 Wendt Library visitors filled out a facilities survey, and the library has been making improvements in response to their votes and comments. Specifically, visitors indicated that artwork was more important to them than adding group study rooms, lighting, color printing, scanners, photocopiers, Infolab computers, or tutoring space.
Thanks go to Tim Rooney, curator at UW-Madison's Tandem Press, for facilitating the donation and hanging of the artwork.

- The ALA Emerging Leaders program has named Inter-Library Loan Operations Manager Heather Weltin to its first class of selected applicants. Upon completion of the program, Weltin will put her leadership skills to use by accepting a term of service on an ALA or chapter committee, task force, working group or project team, as one of the 100 new librarians ready to participate in leadership in the Association, one of its divisions or state chapters.
At the semi-annual Student Appreciation Party in early December, the staff of College Library announced the recipients of their first Student Assistant Excellence-in-Service Awards. Director Carrie Kruse awarded Katie Agnello (right) and Tara Stiles (below, with Kruse) a certificate and Wisconsin Union gift card in recognition of their excellent work ethic and customer service skills. Having recently established these awards, College Library intends to recognize the efforts of two students each semester. Everyone who works at College Library, including student staff, are encouraged to nominate student assistants who exemplify the best in service and attitude.

Andy Katz, UW-Madison School of Journalism alum and ESPN college basketball writer, poked his head in the JRR Tuesday before the highly anticipated Jan. 9 showdown between the Wisconsin and Ohio State men's basketball teams. One of the students working the desk recognized Katz and asked him why one of his fellow journalists at ESPN always underrates Wisconsin. Read what Katz wrote about the encounter in the rankings section under his name here.

25 YEARS AGO IN THE LIBRARIES
- The following book recommendations are from the "From the book truck" section of the Dec.18, 1981, issue of Added Entries.
"Books to read in 1982!
The books listed below are ones that I intend to get around to reading some time in the future. They caught my eye as I was typing the notes and cataloging for a future Rare Books Department exhibit entitled "The Twenties Revisited: A Literary Appreciation" which is tentatively scheduled to be put on display in May 1982.
The Green Hat by Michael Arlen (New York1925, George H. Doran Company) was the romance of the decade. Heroine Iris Fenwick, denied the man or her choice by archaic social norms, endures a series of marriages and affairs before committing suicide by driving her race car into a tree.
A Philo Vance Week-End by S.S. Van Dine ( New York, n.d., Grosset & Dunlap) is a series of novelettes; the detective Philo Vance was modeled after the author and offers a contrast to the more hard-boiled heroes of the thirties.
Miss Lulu Bett by Zona Gale (New York 1920, D. Appleton and Company) was the author's most successful novel. It tells the story of quiet feminist rebellion and depicts, one reviewer has stated, 'the other side of Main Street.'"
