On Friday, September 22, Silver Buckle Press Director Tracy Honn will give an informal brown bag slide talk about her summer trip to Ecuador. The talk will be in room 362 Memorial Library from 12 to 1 p.m.

On the first Friday of every month this fall, the Friends of the SLIS Library will show a film prominently featuring librarians or librarianship. The first film was The Music Man, starring Shirley Jones as Marian the Librarian. Included will be the opportunity for discussion about what it means to be a librarian or information specialist, and the chance to meet new SLIS graduate students.
First Friday Flicks begin at 6 p.m. in SLIS commons, 4th floor Helen C. White. For more information contact Karen Eckberg at 263-2960 or Paula Seeger at 263-2965.

"My bologna has a first name, it's O-S-C-A-R..." Come tour the facilities, visit the information offices and sing the advertising jingles with a tour of the Oscar Mayer division of Kraft Foods on October 17. The Mulitype Advisory Library Committee is sponsoring the tour, which is from 9 to 11:30 a.m. To register, visit: http://psw.scls.lib.wi.us/malc/events.html#walking. The registration deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 10.

"Foirades/Fizzles: Jasper Johns reads Samuel Beckett" is the topic of a lecture that UW-Madison French Professor Mary Lydon will give at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 27. The illustrated talk focuses on a limited edition Jasper Johns book, Foirades/Fizzles. The American painter and graphic artist collaborated with Samuel Beckett on this limited edition of 250 in 1976. Number 235 of that edition, a gift from Jasper Johns to Mary Lydon, will be on display in Special Collections, where the lecture will be held. A reception follows the lecture.

Natalie Norcross and Sylvia Contreras have been appointed interim co-directors of the Health Sciences Libraries while a new director is recruited. Also, Michael Venner and Erika Sevetson have been hired in the Information Services Unit.

Frank Cook, the University archivist, will retire this month after 35-plus years at the UW (not including student employment). A farewell party is scheduled for 2-4 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 28.

Melba Jesudason, formerly of College Library and recently of the Music Library, is retiring Sept. 30. Her co-workers and friends will be throwing a party to celebrate her time at the libraries on Tuesday, Sept. 26, from 2 to 4 p.m., in the staff lounge of Memorial Library. To sign a card or contribute to the party, contact Jane Doyle or Sue Brinson.

Kirstin Dougan, a project assistant in University Archives and Records Management (ARMS), has accepted a similar position in College Library. Kirstin was instrumental in redesigning the ARMS Web site and is a second year SLIS student. Lisa Johnson, also a SLIS student, will be taking Kristen's place as a project assistant with ARMS.

~ Wisconsin libraries receive settlement from Baker and Taylor

The UW-Madison is receiving $9,000 as the result of a Wisconsin lawsuit filed against Baker and Taylor. A number of states accused the book supplier of not fulfilling advertised discounts, and Baker and Taylor elected to settle the case out of court. In a Sept. 1 press conference, GLS Director Ken Frazier, said that the money would be directed towards supporting undergraduate library services.

Memorial Library is merging two departments within its Public Services division to create a new department called Access Services. The reorganization combines the Interlibrary Loan and User Services. Tanner Wray, who worked in the Interlibrary Loan department, will become head of the new department beginning Nov. 1.
Ed Van Gemert, assistant director for Public Services, said the change was necessary because of an increased emphasis on resource sharing and the overlap of the two departments.

As of Sept. 5, photocopy prices in most campus buildings increased from seven cents per copy to 10 cents per copy. The university attributes the rise in copy prices to a decreasing demand in the face of expanding online material. Revenue will go toward photocopy staff, supplies and services. Laser prints will continue to cost seven cents per page.

More than 48,000 students, faculty and staff of the UW-Madison community will receive mass email from the General Library System on Friday, Sept. 15. The message describes new circulation policies, highlights some new electronic resources, and promotes the extensive fall Library Instruction program.

~ Mildred Fish-Harnack exhibit in lobby of Memorial Library

The Memorial Library lobby is host to an exhibit honoring Mildred Fish-Harnack, a UW-Madison alumna and faculty member. Harnack was the only American woman executed by the Nazis during World War II because of her resistance crusade and participation in a spy ring during the war.
The exhibit was prepared by the University Archives and Records Management Service and will run through mid-October. It is held in conjunction with a lecture series about Harnack by Shareen Blair Brysac, the author of “Resisting Hitler: Mildred Fish-Harnack & The Red Orchestra,” and was covered on the front page of the Your Forum section of the Sept. 10 Wisconsin State Journal.

20 YEARS AGO IN THE LIBRARIES

~ The sad end to coffee and doughnuts

In September 1980, Ellen Sandow, chairperson of the Social Committee, declared that there were no longer enough volunteers serving on the committee to provide fresh coffee and doughnuts in the staff lounge of Memorial Library. Truly a dark day in the history of the GLS.
