Student Commendation for Cleaning Stacks
On May 11 student employees Orion Ice Coleman, Patrick Terrence Randolph and Yun Hee Lee received commendation for their work in cleaning the Reference Stacks of Memorial Library. The Reference Stacks consist of 47 stack ranges, including 623 stack collections, consisting of 3,581 that measure almost 10,700 feet. The books in the Reference Department collections contain many oversized volumes, each weighing more than seven pounds. Cleaning just one of the library's largest bibliographical titles—the 754 volumes of The National Union Catalog, Pre-1956 Imprints—involved the overall lifting and handling of at least 10,800 pounds. The primary purpose of the project was to reduce dust levels to provide a healthier and more pleasant working atmosphere for both library staff and patrons in the book stacks of the Reference Department. Additionally, the cleaning project also helped to lessen the dust accumulation on the surfaces of the books in the collection.
