provides direct link to full-text articles from search results online
To make research with online databases easier, UW-Madison Libraries have implemented linking software called SFX. This software allows library patrons to link directly to a full text version of an article by clicking on a "Find It" button next to a desired article title in a search results list.
UW-Madison Libraries have customized SFX software for the campus, calling the program "Find It" and using school colors and graphics. Available to students, faculty, staff and anyone in a campus library, "Find It" was launched this month.
Previously, patrons searched in online databases for article citations, but had to find full-text versions of the article through links in MadCat, by visiting the publisher's Web page or by using other library resources.
"Find It" simplifies this process to two quick clicks. Most online databases are compatible with SFX, and patrons searching them will see "Find It" buttons next to results in a search list that have full-text links available to online resources, regardless of the vendor, accessible through the campus libraries.
"The ultimate goal of 'Find It' is to provide links across all of our many information providers and interfaces to get the user to full-text articles through a common menu," says Susan Barribeau, electronic resources librarian for collection development in Memorial Library.
Patrons may also use "Find It," with the "Citation Linker" utility which finds full-text versions of articles even though there may be very little information available. A patron can use "Citation Linker" with information from a citation in a database that does not have the "Find It" button available or from any other citations they encounter.
"Citation Linker" and "Find It" links will route a patron to a "Find It" menu, which links to full-text versions of the article.
