Poetry, storytelling, music, and bookmaking for kids will highlight campus library participation in the UW-Madison Open House, Saturday, Aug. 19.
The programs on Library Mall have been billed as "Livin' La Vida Polka," and will use the west steps of Memorial Library as a stage. Four major events are planned for the afternoon.

Grammy-award winning songwriter and poet Mason Williams will perform in Madison this August on behalf of UW-Madison libraries. Williams, best known in musical circles for composing and recording the album “Classical Gas,” will appear at Mills Music Hall in the Humanities Building at 7:30 p.m., Monday Aug. 14.

~ Linda Duychak joins College Library staff

Linda Duychak is the new Reference Librarian in the Kohler Art Library. For the past four years, Duychak was a project assistant in the Art Library, where she worked in reference and library instruction.
Duychak is a familiar face in the campus art community. During her tenure at the UW-Madison, she has been an art history dissertator, taught an art history course, and been a teaching assistant for art history survey courses.

The School of Library and Information Studies recently announced that the SLIS 2000 alumnus of the year is Wallace “Wally” Olsen, a 1956 graduate. This distinction is awarded to an alumna or alumnus of the school in recognition of outstanding leadership and accomplishment in library service. wallyolsen.htm

~ SLIS scholarship awarded
~ Memorial Library Web site redesigned

Megan Phillips has won a scholarship from the Special Libraries Association. MeganPhillips.html

The Memorial Library Web site recently underwent style changes and now boasts new fonts and enhanced accessibility. Changes to the site include revisions to the site's secondary pages and a visual tracking history of visited sites. Susan Barribeau and Tom Hefko contributed to the revised sites.

Room 124 in Memorial Library will undergo renovations beginning this month and continuing through January. According to the Memorial Library Management Group, when remodeling is finished, the new study room will contain a state of the art lecture hall and a small 55-seat wired study room.

~ C-SPAN visits special collections
~ Aldo Leopold material in TIME Magazine

On May 23 and 24, the Department of Special Collections in Memorial Library hosted a production crew from C-SPAN for an interview with UW Geography professor David Woodward. The segment will air at 5:50 a.m. and at 6:50 p.m. on Friday, July 7th.
The C-SPAN crew was travelling in the Madison area with the C-SPAN School Bus Program, a mobile classroom and production facility that visits schools across the country. The crew taped footage in and around Memorial Library for a five-minute segment about Woodward and the cartography exhibit in Special Collections titled “Windows on the World.”

A photo from the UW-Madison Library System Archives accompanied a story on conservationist Aldo Leopold in TIME Magazine this spring. Robert McCabe, Leopold’s protege, collected Leopold’s manuscripts while working alongside him. These original works now make up the R.A. McCabe Collection of the Writings of Aldo Leopold, given to the UW-Madison Libraries by McCabe’s wife, Marie McCabe.

20 YEARS AGO IN THE LIBRARIES

~ Wisconsin protects against library theft

In the summer of 1980, the state of Wisconsin passed legislation specifying library theft as a specific crime with stiff penalties. The law protects the library from patrons who walk out of the library with a book that they "forgot" to check out.
