EVENTS
~ An Evening at Old Chautauqua, July 23- Sponsored in part by the UW-Madison Libraries, Evening at Old Chautauqua combines the spirit of the circus with the inquisitiveness of academia for a night of engaging entertainment. The Evening opens with an edifying illustrated lecture by historian and UW-Madison Libraries outreach communications specialist Betty Ferris, who traces the Chautauqua movement from its beginnings in the Lyceums of ancient Greece through its rebirth at Lake Chautauqua, New York, and its influence in shaping Midwest culture. Music, political speeches and humorous and dramatic readings highlight the event. Evening at Old Chautauqua is part of the summer 2002 season of shows at Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua. - Celebrate the careers of Sandy Pfahler, Yvonne Lee, Milan Radovich, Ken Rouse and Mary Tipton Thursday, June 27, from 2 to 5 p.m. at an open house in the Petrovich Reading Room (Room 212 Memorial Library). GLS will lose more than 140 years of cumulative experience with the retirees' departures. Cards and gift donation boxes are available in Room 339 Memorial Library, College Library Main Office, Steenbock Library Administrative Office and the Physics Library. Attendees are welcome to bring their favorite appetizer or dessert to the party. For further information contact, Sandra Guthrie (2-8190) or Ed Van Gemert (2-0950).
- Andrew Spencer joined the staff of the UW-Madison Libraries as the new Slavic studies librarian. Spencer comes to UW-Madison from Indiana University. He holds a B.S. in physics and a B.A. in Russian and Soviet studies from the University of Arizona; an M.A. in Soviet and East European studies from the University of Kansas; and an M.L.S. in library science from Indiana University. His office is in 212F Memorial Library, 262-0343.
- Grace Lee has retired month after working almost 30 years within the General Library System. She is hoping to travel and visit her family as well as dedicate time to working as a translator. A retirement party was held April 25 in the Memorial Library staff lounge. LINK to pictures from Lee's retirement party
- The New Zealand Book Arts Association invited Marta Gomez, Preservation/Memorial Library, B106C Memorial Library, to teach a series of workshops this summer on various aspects of the book arts: one on bookbinding; one on book structures; and one on book enclosures. This is Gomez's second visit to New Zealand to teach on book arts; in 1994, she taught a similar series of workshops for the same organization in Auckland. At that time, she also gave a series of lecture-demonstrations with her husband, Ivan Soll, a UW-Madison philosophy professor, and the two presented their work at various colleges and universities in and around Auckland. Gomez and Soll design, produce and publish artists' books at their own Tiramisu Press in Madison.
Gomez said she is looking forward to the trip. She said the last visit opened up some rewarding professional relationships to the community of book artists in New Zealand and resulted in her work being shown in several exhibitions in New Zealand and collected by the rare books department of the City Library of Auckland.
- Emilie Ngo-Nguidjol, Reference and Francophone Studies, 262A Memorial Library, received the Dr. Brenda Pfaehler Award of Excellence, a TRIO award, May 2 in a ceremony at Lowell Hall. TRIO is a federally funded program designed to provide academic support to low-income, first-generation college students and students with disabilities. Graduating UW-Madison senior Camille Mason nominated Ngo-Nguidjol.
The nominating students delivered a brief speech about the reason why they nominated someone. In her speech, Mason said that during her first year at UW-Madison, she met Ngo-Nguidjol at the Reference Desk of Memorial Library and was very encouraged and inspired by her help. Mason said she started studying near the Reference Desk on a regular basis because she always felt that seeing Ngo-Nguidjol, a black woman, assist people professionally with a smile, and speaking fluent French when the need arose, inspired her to pursue her major in French.
Ngo-Nguidjol said she was happy to have helped a "disadvantaged" student persevere and added that Mason's speech made her quite emotional.
"Personally, I'm glad to be at a library where I can make a difference in the life struggling students," she said. "The whole experience was very personable and moving." LINK to more information on federal TRIO programs
- Geri Laudati, Mills Music Library director, will act as curator of Special Collections beginning June 1. Laudati has been responsible for the administration of the Mills Music Library, including collection development, sound archives, special collections and the audio facility, since 1989.
GLS expects to recruit for Special Collections curator position after July 1. Until a permanent replacement is hired, Laudati will have a split appointment as acting curator of Special Collections and Mills Music Library director.
- Yolanda Gilmore has resigned from her position as a full-time librarian in the Memorial Library Reference Department. She had held the position since August 2000. Gilmore now lives in Rockford, Ill., with her husband and is expecting twins.
- Staff members Jan Duxbury and Jamie Woods will take over for CTS retirees Yvonne Lee and Mary Tipton July 5. Duxbury, librarian in the Serials Control Unit, will assume the duties as acting head of the Serials Control and Binding Unit. Woods, currently a senior librarian in the Original Cataloging Unit, will become the acting head of the Copy Cataloging and Catalog Maintenance Units. To facilitate the transition into their new roles, Duxbury and Woods will begin working closely with Lee and Tipton in the coming weeks.
- David Null, head of Reference Services at Memorial Library, has agreed to succeed Robin Rider as acting university archivist beginning June 1. While employed at the University of New Mexico, Null served as acting head of Special Collections and Archives. GLS expects to recruit for the position of university archivist after July 1.
Nancy McClements, senior academic librarian in Reference Services, has agreed to serve as acting head of Reference Services in Memorial Library beginning June 1.
- Victoria Chu is the new East Asian studies librarian. Chu holds three degrees from the University of Toronto: a Master of information studies; a Master of philosophy in East Asian studies; and a Master of Arts in East Asian studies. Her B.A. degrees in political science and history and philosophy are from McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. She also attended the International Cultural Exchange School of Fudan University in Shanghai, China. Chu was coordinator for reference, instruction, and gifts and exchange services at the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library at the University of Toronto prior to her current position at UW-Madison.
- Tanner Wray, head of Access Services, Memorial Library, and Karl E. Debus-Lopez, chief acquisitions librarian and head of Acquisitions and Serials, CTS, GLS, presented a program called "Patron-Focused Services: Models of Collaborative Interlibrary Loan, Collection Development, and Acquisitions" at the ALA Annual Conference in Georgia this month. Along with colleagues from Purdue University and Thomas Crane Public Library in Quincy, Mass., they presented three models in which acquisitions or other funds were set aside to purchase books requested by patrons through interlibrary loan processes. Workflows, scope criteria and departmental relationships were described and data was presented on the effectiveness of these models, including turnaround time, average cost per book, patron satisfaction and subsequent circulation of titles. - Kate Anderson accepted a position with the Health Sciences Libraries as a research intern at the Pharmacy Library. She will be coordinating print and electronic reserve operations; team-teaching course-related and drop-in library sessions; providing reference service; and working on collection-related projects to prepare for the upcoming merger of the three Health Sciences Libraries into the new Learning Center facility. Anderson worked at the Pharmacy Library during the past semester as a library services assistant-advanced (project). Prior to receiving her M.L.S. from UW-Madison in May 2000, Anderson held positions as a graduate assistant for Information Services at the CIMC, academic advisor for international relations majors and a teaching assistant in the English Department.
- For the second time, UW-Madison SLIS Continuing Education Services hosted the U.S. State Department Embassy Information Resource Center staff training program, June 10 to 13. The 22 participants in the training program are reference and information specialists in U.S. embassy and consulate libraries, or IRCs, in countries all over the world. The participants are nationals of the countries where the embassies are located, but their work is providing information about the United States, particularly government information.
The State Department brings a different group to the United States for several weeks of training each year. During the week spent in Madison, IRC staff heard presentations at Memorial Library about government documents, area studies collections and the Grants Information Center. At the state Capitol, they heard talks from Sen. Fred Risser, D-Madison, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel State House Bureau chief, legislative liaisons and lobbyists. They also visited the State Law Library, Dane County Circuit Court, the Wisconsin Historical Society and UW's School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Memorial Library staff who helped with the training program are Beth Harper, Robin Ryder, Larry Ashmun, Vicki Hill, David Henige, Emilie Ngo-Nguidjol and Liz Breed. SLIS staffers Jane Pearlmutter, Anne Moser, Kellie Henandez, Debra Shapiro and Louise Robbins also contributed to the session. Jim Danky and Nancy Mulhearn from WHS also aided the training program. - Once the dust was settled, there was only one thing left for CTS to do: throw a party. An open house celebrating the reorganization of CTS was held last month on the third floor of Memorial Library. LINK to photos of the event
- Silver Buckle Press held an open house forum May 14 for book artists to share their work and see what others have been doing in the book arts in the UW-Madison Art Department. LINK to photos of the open house
- Justine Martin will be the new research intern at College Library and the Social Work Library. Beginning July 1, Martin will work 50 percent time at College Library providing reference service and assisting in the development of new services for faculty in the New Media Center and 50 percent time at the Social Work Library performing a variety of public and technical services duties.
Martin completed her M.L.S. at UW-Madison in May. During the past year she worked as a project assistant at College Library and a night and weekend supervisor at Kohler Art Library. She also completed a Library Instruction field project at Wendt Library and did practicum work in Reference and Collection Development at Kohler. As a part of a museum studies course, Martin was a member of the curatorial team for the Revealing Forms exhibit at the Elvehjem Museum of Art this spring.

~ GLS staff development program gets grant
- Wisconsin's small technology businesses now have access to one of North America's largest research library collections through a partnership program among UW-Madison Libraries, the UW-Extension's Small Business Development Center, the Wisconsin Department of Commerce and the U.S. Small Business Administration. The Wisconsin Technical Information Partnership, or WisTIP, is designed specifically for entrepreneurs and technology companies, and offers them access to information regarding science, business, medicine, law and engineering. - Author Kathleen Ernst turned to Silver Buckle Press director Tracy Honn for expertise on typesetting and printing presses for her book "Whistler in the Dark," one of the two latest releases in the American Girl "History Mysteries" series. In the book, 12-year-old Emma Henderson's Civil War-widow mother accepts a position in Colorado Territory as a newspaper publisher and editor. Honn's knowledge of printing improved the work's historical accuracy. Type pieces from Silver Buckle Press appear in a section of the book called "A Peek into the Past," wherein readers receive a nonfictionalized description of the story's time period. - Mid-May, the UW System approved a grant for the GLS staff development program. Lois Komai, Information Services/Steenbock Library, accepted the funding on behalf of the Librarians' Assembly Professional Committee.

~ Kohler 'Artists' Books' goes virtual~ Parallel Press releases 'Sand Island Succession' by Judith Strasser
- This past semester Lyn Korenic, Kohler Art Library director, worked with SLIS student Christine Dent, on developing a virtual version of the exhibit mounted in Special Collections, "Artists' Books: Highlights from the Kohler Art Library."
The virtual exhibit includes the text of the gallery guide used for the exhibit, a selection of images from the artists' books on display, artists' biographies, calendar of events, a brief tribute to Bill Bunce and a bibliography. The artists' biographies provide hard-to-find information on book artists. Dent gathered the information by writing each artist in the exhibit. The virtual exhibit went live June 5. - Four years ago, Judith Strasser moved into a rustic cabin on Lake Superior. With no plumbing, she hauled water for cooking, dashed into the chilly lake to bathe and struggled to stay warm and dry on raw June days. She began to "hear the poems I promised to write" in exchange for this visit to "paradise" as poet-in-residence at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. This vivid collection—"Sand Island Succession: Poems of the Apostles"—is the newest chapbook released by the Parallel Press. LINK to the full story
