- Bill Bunce memorial service, May 1
Join friends and colleagues to celebrate the life of Bill Bunce, director of the Kohler Art Library from 1966-1999, at the Alumni Lounge, Pyle Center on Wednesday, May 1, at 3:30 p.m.
- Poetry reading, May 1
Distinguished UW-Madison readers will share their favorite ethnic short stories, poems, and novel excerpts at a reading titled "Celebrating Our Stories: Voices of African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Native-Americans and Chicanos." Scheduled readers include Peggy Choy, Roberta Hill, Sean Teuton, Alicia Chávez, Ken Frazier, Nellie McKay and Cherene Sherrard. The event will be held on, Wednesday, May 1, in College Library Room 1193, 4:30-6 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

An open house celebrating the reorganization in Central Technical Services will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Wednesday, May 8, on the third floor of Memorial Library. Tours of the division are scheduled to begin in the Acquisitions and Serials Department at 1:45 and 2:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.
- 'Life of a Teacher,' May 21
A Teaching and Learning Symposium, "The Life of a Teacher: An Invitation to Reflect," will be held at Grainger Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, May 21. The following day there will be a series of cross-campus workshops on instructional technology. The General Library System is cosponsoring the event along with the Office of the Provost, DoIT Learning Technology and Distance Education, Creating a Collaborative Academic Environment, and the Teaching Academy. Information about the symposium and workshops can be found at: http://www.wisc.edu/provost/ccae/symform.html. There is no charge to participants; the registration deadline is May 10. An online registration form is available at the Web site.
- Spring Walking Tour of Libraries, May 21
Those taking the annual spring Walking Tour of libraries will visit the Wisconsin State Law Library and the Veterans Museum Archives & Research Center on Tuesday, May 21. The event is sponsored by the Multitype Advisory Library Committee (MALC) of the South Central Library System. - Emily Newton Wixson and Yvonne Lee were recently named Librarians of the Year for 2002. The awards are given annually to recognize outstanding contributions to campus library services by two unclassified staff members of the General Library System, one who has worked for the system more than 10 years and one who has been on the staff 10 years or less. Wixson of Steenbock Library, who was recognized from among those serving less than 10 years, has received national recognition for her work in user education and is currently the chair of the Association of Wisconsin Special Librarians. Lee works in Central Technical Services and is currently head of the Check-in Unit in the Acquisitions and Serials Department. Lee has been with GLS for 35 years and plans to retire later this year. - Jeremy Stanek has joined Memorial Mail Service as afternoon mail service supervisor.
- Ed Van Gemert has been named associate director for Public Services for the General Library System, which includes management of public services within the General Library System and the administration of member libraries. Van Gemert has been with UW-Madison Libraries since 1982. For the last five years, he has been the assistant director for Public Services in Memorial Library. Prior to that Van Gemert has served as head of User Services in Memorial Library and as the College Library Media and Microcomputer Center librarian. Early in his career he worked at WiLS. Van Gemert earned his master's in library science from the UW-Madison.
- Robin Rider has been named associate director for Collection Development, Management and Preservation for the General Library System. Rider came to the UW-Madison Libraries in 1996 as curator and head of the Department of Special Collections. Recently, she also served concurrently as acting university archivist and as the history of science bibliographer. In addition, Rider teaches in the Department of History of Science. Her appointment as the collection development officer began April 1. Rider earned her doctorate in history from the University of California, Berkeley.
- Linda Duychak has accepted a half-time position with the Digital Content Group. She is also a half-time reference librarian at the Kohler Art Library, and will be helping the DCG develop and work on digital initiatives, such as the Digital Library for the Decorative Arts and Material Culture.
- ~Grace Lee retired this month after working almost 30 years within the General Library System. She is hoping to travel and visit her family as well as dedicate time to working as a translator. A retirement party was held Thursday, April 25, in the Memorial Library staff lounge. See pictures from the reception in the next issue of Libraries@UW-Madison.
- ~Lynell Mosely has recently been hired as a night/weekend supervisor for Access Services. She started April 27.

- On April 16, staff at the Memorial Library Circulation Desk closed the book on due date receipts when they handed out their last one. And next month, they will stop sending printed overdue notices. See the full story
- Staff should direct library patrons to visit their library accounts online using MadCat's MyLibrary service. This feature allows patrons to: view any items they have checked out, see the items' due dates, check the status of any pending requests, renew currently checked out items, see whether items are waiting on a library hold shelf, and view any fines or fees. Encouraging users to use this service is expected to reduce the need for paper notices. MyLibrary can be accessed by visiting the MadCat home page.
- The Department of Special Collections, in conjunction with the 10th annual 18th- and 19th-century British Women Writers Conference, has organized an exhibit titled "Very Cheap and Pretty Frequent," which runs through May 24. The exhibit highlights 18th- and 19th-century British periodicals. The conference focused on 'Evolving Domains of Knowledge and Representation.'
- The Second Sight Campaign, a project of local Rotary and Lions clubs, has begun collecting used eyeglasses. Donations may be left at the front desk in the lobby of Memorial Library until May 10. Donations are delivered to Lions Eyeglasses Recycling Centers where they are cleaned, categorized by prescription, bagged and labeled, and then sent to countries such as Costa Rica, Mexico, Guatemala, and Zimbabwe. Donations from employees at libraries other than Memorial can be made by sending them to Ed Van Gemert, 279 Memorial Library.
- Memorial Library InfoLab recently purchased 10 Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop computers that are now available for checkout at no charge. The laptop computers may be used to access the Internet via any one of three wireless connection sites in Memorial Library. LINK to more information on laptops and campus wireless service
- A Web site called "Employment in the Libraries" http://www.library.wisc.edu/libraries/jobs.htm featuring student, academic, and classified listings for library jobs is now available. The site includes an online job application form for students. A permanent link appears on the campus libraries Web page http://www.library.wisc.edu/libraries/.
