EVENTS

• The Friends Book Sale, which was held last month, March 13 to 16, was a great success, according to John Tortorice. Only 11 boxes of books were left at the event's end. More than 40 volunteers clocked about 150 hours of work for the sale. Gross receipts from the sale totaled more than $21,000 -- the third biggest total ever and just a few hundred dollars behind the second biggest sale, Tortorice says. The Wisconsin State Journal featured the event on the front page of its Daybreak section March 13.
• WORT's Rado Literature (89.9 FM) celebrates National Poetry Month with a reading by Andrea Potos at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 2. Potos will read new poems from her Bronte sister series. She will also preview this year's poetry offerings from the libraries' Parallel Press. Potos was the first poet published in the Parallel Press poetry series.

• After almost 30 years of dedicated service to the UW-Madison Libraries, Ed Duesterhoeft retired last month from Memorial Library.  Duesterhoeft is known for his dedication to public service and managed the library's Microforms Media Center for 20 years.

• The Digital Content Group recently completed key hires to take on a variety of new challenges relating to digital projects. The unit’s newest staff members are Deniz Balgamis, Kirstin Dougan and Amy Rudersdorf.

  Balgamis is currently enrolled in UW-Madison's SLIS program and has worked at Memorial Library for several years in different capacities. Balgamis has been hired as a project assistant and her primary work within the DCG will be related to text-encoding initiatives. She began her work with the DCG in early January.

  Dougan has joined the DCG staff as a research intern. She is a December 2001 graduate of SLIS and will be working in the areas of metadata and documentation. Dougan has worked in various areas of the libraries including Archives, College Library and the DCG. She has worked with the DCG since July 2001 and began her two-year research intern position in early January.

  Rudersdorf is the new Digital Services librarian and will be responsible for managing all phases of metadata design and creation, text-encoding, and Web site development for the DCG. She comes to DCG from the University of Pittsburgh where she received her MLS and worked with their Digital Research Library and School of Information Sciences.

• Central Technical Services reorganized its entire work area in January. According to Richard Reeb, assistant director for CTS, the relocation took about 10 months of planning. In just three days, about 80 CTS employees were relocated to match a new departmental organization within the division -- Acquisitions and Serials, and Cataloging. The departments were created within the division more than a year ago in December 2000. "The longer our new work units/departments were dispersed throughout the division, the more urgent it became to realign our workspace with the new organization," he says.

  Reeb says the most challenging parts were coordinating the various subprojects encompassed by the move, such as working with electricians and shelving installers, and keeping congestion and confusion to a minimum while furniture and equipment were being moved. The easiest part of the project, however, was maintaining momentum once the move began. • Robin Rider, curator of Special Collections and acting UW-Madison archivist, presented a program at the Milwaukee Public Museum as part of the university's "Whys and Wows," a day of exhibits and hands-on learning at the museum. The program is part of the On-the-Road program, an extension of the Wisconsin Idea that takes university presentations to Wisconsin's  major cities. Rider, the history of science bibliographer, presented a program on the history of science at Wisconsin and exhibited materials from the Aldo Leopold collections held in the Archives as well as in Special Collections. • Elisabeth Owens recently joined Library Communications as a half-time academic librarian. She will focus on publishing and outreach as well as grant and funding opportunities for the libraries. She earned her master's in library science from UW-Madison. Owens also works on campus as a half-time researcher with the Institute for Research on Poverty, conducting research and policy analyses on welfare reform issues and writing articles and reports for state and national publications. Her office is in 372 Memorial Library.
• Pam Andreoni has joined Administrative Services as the new human resources assistant. Andreoni will assume the student and LTE hiring process along with the academic search and screen activities. Her office is in 367 Memorial Library.
• Dave Grindrod, Memorial Library Circulation Office, has left UW-Madison to take a position in Washington, D.C. with Aspen Systems Corporation. Grindrod will be working as an analyst for the Neighborhood Networks communications team. Neighborhood Networks is a community-based initiative created by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in 1995. Through innovative private/public partnerships, Neighborhood Networks establishes multi-service community technology centers that bring digital opportunity and lifelong learning to low- and moderate-income residents living in HUD housing. • The theme of the 2001 Wisconsin Women Library Workers quilt was "Coming of Age." Members Nancy McClements, Kathy Rohde, Maureen Welch, Kathleen Weibel, Julie Chase, Marge Loch-Wouters and Shannon S. Lang each crafted a square for the quilt. The quilt has been on display in the WiLS office.

  Every year since 1980, Wisconsin Women Library Workers have made a quilt to celebrate the art of quilting, to enjoy the camaraderie of a quilting bee, and to raise money for WWLW. Different volunteers make individual squares that are assembled by a designer. Later, WWLW members who attend the annual retreat in Door County work on the quilting. The quilt is usually raffled off in February at the annual Cookie/Book Exchange. The winner this year is Kirsten Houtman, WiLS. • Librarians' Index to the Internet included Africa Focus among its listings for a special edition of its LIIWEEK for Black History month. Check out New Resources Related To The African American Experience on LII’s Web site. LINK to LII Web site
• According to organizers, the 2001 State, University and University Hospital and Clinics Employees Combined Campaign of Dane County surpassed its goal of $2,675,000 for charitable causes. The achievement is especially gratifying in light of public anxieties about terrorism, war and the economic recession, according to campaign organizers. SECC-Dane contributions by university employees as of early February were up almost $182,000 -- an increase of more than 18 percent from last year at the same time -- to $1,173,893. For the General Library System, there were 141 donors (up from 135 in the 2000 campaign), with a total of $39,208 contributed (from the previous campaign's $37,201). In total, GLS had 53 percent participation, one of the best levels on campus. At the March 5 awards ceremony, Jay Huemmer accepted on behalf of GLS the second place plaque for total dollars donated in all state and UW System departments with 100 to 400 employees.

• The March 2002 Atlantic Monthly quoted African Studies and Anthropology Bibliographer David Henige in an article titled "1491." In the piece, a new school of researchers proposes that before the Western hemisphere became the New World to European explorers and settlers, it was more vastly populated and sophisticated than has been thought. The author explores new evidence of both the extent of the population and its agricultural advancement, which leads to the remarkable conjecture that humans engineered the Amazon rain forest. Henige is the author of "The Chronology of Oral Tradition" (1974), "Oral Historiography" (1982), "In Search of Columbus" (1991), "Numbers from Nowhere" (1998), "Historical Evidence and Argument" (forthcoming), several reference books and numerous articles. • Library Express, a service that delivers electronic copies of print journal articles directly to computer desktops, is giving researchers a fast track to the latest scholarly material. Users request articles through the service, and usually within three days they receive a Web address to view their order online. Library Express is available to all faculty, academic and classified staff, and graduate students. "This is part of the campus libraries' efforts to provide fast and convenient access to journal articles, especially in cases where increasing prices have forced us to cancel subscriptions," says Kenneth Frazier, GLS director.

• A First Draft Version of Finnegans Wake by David Hayman was just published by the Parallel Press, an imprint of the UW-Madison Libraries. The print-on-demand facsimile is a response to unprecedented demand for copies of the out-of-print book, which is currently online at http://libtext.library.wisc.edu/JoyceColl/index.html. Hayman is Evjue-Bascom professor emeritus of comparative literature at the UW-Madison.
• Libraries magazine (spring 2002), published in February by the Friends of the UW-Madison Libraries. Copies available through Library Communications, 262-0076 or send an e-mail to friends@library.wisc.edu.
• Award-winning poet Allison Funk explores the intricate family relationships of painter Vanessa Bell, sister of writer Virginia Woolf, in “From the Sketchbooks of Vanessa Bell,” the latest chapbook from Parallel Press. Link to more information about Funk and the latest chapbook
• ~The Cooperative Children's Book Center has released its latest Guide to Children's LIterature, CCBC Choices 2002. The book describes 193 books for children and young adults published in 2001 that have been recommended by the staff of the School of Education's CCBC. 25 YEARS AGO IN THE LIBRARIES

• Library employees Robert Gakovich and Milan Radovich attended the First International Yugoslavian Heritage Conference in Duluth and Chisholm, Minn., April 21 - 23, 1977. At the Conference, 25 scholars from the United States, Canada, and Yugoslavia presented their papers. Gakovich presented a paper called "Source Material for the Study of the Serbs in the United States,"  and Radovich presented a paper titled "Serbian Ethnic Press and Publishing in the United States."
