EVENTS

• A MacArthur "genius grant" winner and the curator of the acclaimed exhibit "Van Gogh and Gauguin: The Studio of the South" at the Art Institute of Chicago are among the speakers in the spring lecture series sponsored by Friends. The series, billed as "Artists' Books," begins Thursday, Feb. 7. LINK to more information abut the event
• Friends will present the community's most notable members reading "Madison's Favorite Love Poems" 4:30-6 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 13, on the third floor of College Library, 600 N. Park St. The event, hosted by Ken Frazier, will celebrate the sonnets, haikus and limericks that explore the most powerful human emotion: love. LINK to more information about the event
• ~The Friends Book Sale will be held March 13-16, Wednesday through Saturday, Room 116, Memorial Library, 728 State St. The Preview Sale will take place from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday and there will be an admission charge of $5. The regular sale will be held from 10:30 a.m.- 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday. A $2-bag sale will also be held from 10:30 a.m - 2 p.m Saturday.

• Geri Laudati, head of the Mills Music Library, gave a talk Jan. 19, at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in New Orleans. The Scandinavian and Special Topics Discussion Groups held a combined session on aspects of collection management, acquisitions and reference for fine arts materials from Scandinavian countries, and featured Laudati as well as Vanessa Kam, assistant art librarian at Stanford University.
• George Andrew Spencer will join the UW- Madison Library staff as and East European Slavic bibliographer in Memorial Library, General Library System. Spencer has a B.A. in Russian and Soviet Studies with a minor in Russian history from the University of Arizona. In addition, he has an M.A. in Soviet and East European Studies with a minor in Russian history from Kansas University. Spencer has also studied Russian and Kazakh languages at the Alma-Ata Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages, Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan, USSR. Spencer is coming from Indiana University and will join our staff April 1.
• Jim Jonas has joined the Pharmacy Library as a full-time research intern. Jonas graduated in 2001 with a master's degree from UW-Madison and will be in charge of overseeing the circulation desk, supervising student employees, assisting with reference instruction, and serving on various campus and Health Sciences Library committees.
• Shu-Chin Wu will be leaving her position as night supervisor for Access Services at Memorial Library in order to devote more time to completing her Ph.D. Wu has been an employee since September 1998, and her last day is Jan. 31.
• The Memorial Mail Service supervisor position has been split into two 50 percent positions, a morning supervisor and an afternoon supervisor. Jay Huemmer has taken a temporary re-assignment to the morning position, and Allen Seaholm, the LTE since December, will remain in the afternoon position until a permanent replacement is hired.
• Silver Buckle Press director Tracy Honn presented "Collaborative Explorations" Jan. 25 at the Minnesota Center for the Book Arts in Minneapolis. As one of three lecturers, Honn detailed the planning and executing of "Exquisite Horse," the Press' publication featuring the cooperative efforts of 32 contemporary book artists and letterpress printers. In "Exquisite Horse," each artist designed and printed 100 copies of a section (head or tail) of a quadruped, with the specifications that the parts would meet in the middle and that letterpress would be used, at least in part, to execute the print. The result--a la the Surrealists--is a delightful body of work. "Exquisite Horse" is also featured in "Collaborative Visions," a MCBA exhibit, through Feb. 21.
• The ACRL recently selected Finding Information on Experiments for Psychology to be added to its Internet Education Project database. Memorial Reference staff Helene Androski and Steve Frye along with Blaire Bundy at DoIT created this tutorial to assist users in selecting the best information about psychology experiments including journal databases and records.

• CTS completed the reorganization of its entire work area in January. Over the course of three days, the stations of about 80 CTS employees were reshuffled to increase efficiency. LINK to photos of the CTS workspace, (long) before reorganization and during the process

LIBRARY NEWS

• Friends announces its sixth-annual grant program to campus libraries. Through this program of small grants, Friends has collectively given out 92 scholarships for more than $100,000. In addition, the group has given $25,000 in special purchases requested by library units. The 2002 deadline for applications is noon, Monday, April 15.
• Poet Barbara Edelman reflects on both the joys and hardships of youth in Parallel Press’s latest release, "A Girl in Water." This 16-piece chapbook delves into the imagination of a woman who struggles to form her own identity using her mother and absent father as role models. • The South Central Library System is offering several continuing education courses this February that are free to all UW-Madison library staff. LINK to information on available courses
• PrimateLit, the primary database for searching the literature of primatology, is now available in Web format. The database includes more than 200,000 citations covering the literature from 1940 to the present. PrimateLit is searchable by author, article or journal title, subject, taxonomic name, geographical region, publication date and keyword. LINK to database

• Josh Mortensen, a former intern in Library Communications, recently made headlines with an article he wrote about his experiences with John Walker Lindh, the young American caught fighting for the Taliban. 25 YEARS AGO IN THE LIBRARIES

• OCLC announced during the ALA Midwinter Meeting plans for a pilot test-run of its Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Communication's Subsystem during the summer of 1977. The OCLC ILL Communications Subsystem provided libraries with online capabilities to check due dates, maintain complete and accurate records of all loaned and borrowed items, transmit messages, and issue overdue notifications for lending and borrowing libraries.
