The weekly scientific journal Nature can now be read throughout the state on the desktops of all UW System faculty, staff and students, thanks to a license negotiated by UW-Madison Libraries. Starting this month, the weekly Nature will be available along with its seven Nature sister journals (monthlies). MadCat and the campus electronic journals list have been updated to include links to these titles. The agreement also includes electronic ILL for the Nature monthlies and back files, also available in MadCat.
For about one year, UW-Madison served as a beta test site for the full-text version of some of the Nature publications. When this test period ended in March, the UW-Madison Libraries began negotiating a license for the periodicals.
The family of publications now available include: Nature, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Cell Biology, Nature Genetics, Nature Immunology, Nature Medicine, Nature Neuroscience, and Nature Structural Biology. Link here for more information
Beginning Nov. 20, and running through Jan. 9, 2002, CCBC will host award discussions for children's and young adult book awards. The sessions are open to any interested adult. Participants are expected to read most or all of the books on the discussion lists. Each discussion will be held in the Elizabeth Burr Room of the CCBC, 4290 Helen C. White Hall, 5:10-9:10 p.m. Advance registration is required for each discussion. Contact Megan Schliesman, 262-9503, or schliesman@education.wisc.edu. Link here for information about the discussions

~ Campus launches My UW-Madison portal
~ Frontline Awareness training available to library staff
~ Memorial Library acquires defibrillator
~ Digital Content Group created
At the beginning of the month, the "My UW-Madison Web Portal" was introduced to all students on campus. This personalized online service provides campus information according to a user’s preferences. Students may individualize My UW-Madison with features such as campus and personal calendars, class schedule, student records, and account information. The portal has been in development by DoIT and campus advisory groups for almost a year.
The UW-Madison Libraries are participating in the UW-Madison portal. Portal users can access library resources such as the main Web site, MadCat, subject and reference guides, and bookmark pages for personal use. There is also access to the CLUE tutorial, course reserves, email reference, and individual library information. The library component of My UW-Madison will be further developed over the next year. Ed Van Gemert, GLS assistant director for public services, is the library representative on the Campus Portal Advisory Group and also chairs the Libraries' Portal Working Group.
Though students are the only users of My UW-Madison so far, it will be available to faculty and staff in spring 2002. Staff may preview the portal by clicking on the "Annie Student" button on the Web site.
~ Information about Swiss exhibit appears in Capital Times
In the Nov. 12 edition of the Capital Times, editor Dave Zweifel wrote a column about the Swiss exhibit currently displayed in the west corridor of Memorial Library, "The Sister Republics: Switzerland and the United States from 1776 to the Present." Alfred Defago, the former Swiss ambassador to the United States spoke at the "official" opening of the exhibit. Zweifel's column, "Plain Talk," included some of the highlights from the lecture and the display.
Through November and December, 1976, a traveling exhibit from the Library of Congress was on display in Memorial Library. The exhibit, "Papermaking: Art and Craft," drew extensively on the collections of the Library of Congress. The exhibit illustrated the role of paper in giving ideas their visible form and helping to communicate knowledge.
QUOTATION
"No university in the world has ever risen to greatness without a correspondingly great library... When this is no longer true, then will our civilization have come to an end."
