- UW-Madison College Library staff are celebrating Halloween with pumpkins and poetry. Staff are offering a minimum $75 reward for guessing the weight of two massive pumpkins on display. In addition, the library is hosting a potentially spooky poetry reading.
On Wednesday, Oct. 31, students, faculty and staff are invited to read original poetry at a Halloween poetry open mic. Aspiring poets may bring poems on topics of autumn, Halloween/dark side themes, or read selections from famous poets. The reading will be from 4 to 5 p.m. in 1193 College Library, Helen C. White Hall, 600 N. Park St. A special exhibit in the Ethnic Studies Room of College Library will focus on the Mexican holiday, the "Day of the Dead." A student, Sofia Erazo-Castrejon, initiated the project and is working with librarians Janice Rice and Jaqui Alvarez.
Following the poetry reading, the winner of the “Great Pumpkin Contest” will be announced. To pre-register to read at the poetry reading, contact Noelle Rydell at 263-4819 or email, nrydell@library.wisc.edu.
- Women & Learning, a lecture series by three nationally known UW-Madison scholars, present the second lecture Thursday, Nov. 1. The lectures, sponsored by the Friends of the UW-Madison Libraries, sample women’s scholarship in literature, science, and history.
Deborah Blum, a journalism and mass communications professor, will present the second lecture, “The Nature of Love.” Blum won a Pulitzer Prize in 1992 for her newspaper series on primate research that inspired her book, The Monkey Wars. In 1997 she wrote Sex on the Brain: The Biological Differences Between Men and Women. She is now writing a biography of Harry Harlow, the pioneering psychologist and founder of the UW-Madison’s Primate Center. Harlow helped drive a revolution in psychology that forced science to confront the nature of affection and relationships. Blum's talk will be at 4:30 p.m. in 126 Memorial Library. - On Wednesday, Nov. 14, the Women & Learning lecture series will host Gerda Lerner for the final lecture. Lerner, a pioneer in the study of women’s history, will present, "Biography and Autobiography: Challenges and Contradictions." She is the Robinson Edwards professor of history emerita. Lerner developed a new discipline of academic study when she established the country's first graduate program in women's history at Sarah Lawrence College. She later founded the doctoral program at the UW-Madison. Her autobiography, Fireweed: A Political Autobiography, will be published in 2002. Lerner's lecture will be at 4:30 p.m. in the Department of Special Collections. Link to more information about the lecture series
- Alfred Defago, the former Ambassador of Switzerland to the United States, will speak about Switzerland’s contributions to American history Tuesday, Nov. 6. Defago’s lecture, “More than Just a Tiny Footnote: Switzerland's Mark on American History,” will mark the opening of an exhibit that celebrates the relationship between Switzerland and the United States.
Defago is a visiting professor of International Studies at the UW-Madison. In addition to his ambassadorship, he has served as Consul General of Switzerland in New York, he was the director of the Federal Office of Culture, and he was head of the National and Economic Affairs Department of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation.
A traveling exhibit created by the Library of Congress and the Swiss National Library, “The Sister Republics: Switzerland and the United States From 1776 to the Present,” will be unveiled following Defago’s lecture. The exhibit will continue through Jan. 10, 2002 in the west corridor of Memorial Library.

- The "Partners in Giving" campaign, an annual workplace campaign that raises money for local charitable causes, began Oct. 15 and runs through Nov. 30. The State, University and UW Hospital & Clinics Employees Combined Campaign of Dane County, or SECC-Dane, contributed more than $2.57 million last year to this campaign.
SECC-Dane is the largest annual employee-run fund-raising campaign in Wisconsin. Since its inception, the campaign has raised more than $31.3 million, and its goal this year is $2,675,000. Participants in this year’s campaign include ten nonprofit "umbrella" organizations and 367 individual charities. Collectively, these organizations provide a broad range of services, including support for AIDS research, international disaster relief, legal assistance for the disadvantaged, and environmental stewardship.

- Tanner Wray, head of Access Services, and Karl Debus, head of the Acquisitions and Serials Department and chief Acquisitions librarian, will speak Friday November 2 at a conference in Charleston. The librarians, along with a colleague from Purdue University, will present, “Patron-Focused Services: Two Models of Collaborative Interlibrary Loan, Collection Development, and Acquisitions.”
Wray and Debus will examine two university models in which acquisitions or other funds were set aside to purchase books requested by patrons through interlibrary loan. The speakers will look at the different methods used to purchase new materials. They will also present data on the effectiveness of each program, including turnaround time, average cost per book, patron satisfaction, and subsequent circulation of titles.
The Charleston conference focuses on issues in book and serial acquisition. This is the 21st year of the conference and this year’s title is “The Trends They Are A'Changing.”
- Abdulla Badsha, an original cataloger of South Asian language materials in CTS, published his English dissertation, Durrell's Heraldic Universe and the Alexandria Quartet: A Subaltern View, in 2001. The book is in the process of being cataloged by CTS bibliographers.
- Karen Dunn will join the Steenbock Library Information Services staff in mid-December. Dunn comes to Madison from UW-Oshkosh, where she worked as a reference/instruction/outreach librarian for the past three years. She brings experience in Web page development, participation on library and campus-level committees, and an involvement with the WAAL to her new position. Dunn received her MLS from the UW-Madison in 1998.
- Deb Reilly has resigned as of Oct. 1 from her position with the General Library System. Her 20 years of service to the UW-Madison libraries included many significant achievements. The department has been renamed Library Communications, which includes the Editorial Office, Silver Buckle Press, Graphics, and the On-the-Road/Alumni Association program. Don Johnson will head the new department, which includes Tracy Honn, Dan Joe, and Betty Ferris. John Tortorice, a development officer, will continue to work with Robin Rider of Special Collections, Niki Graham of the UW Foundation, as well as with the Friends of the UW-Madison Libraries. Cathy Shapiro, a financial specialist for gifts and grants, will be part of Administrative Services under Sandra Guthrie.

~ Friends fall book sale raises $19,000~ Memorial Library installs occupancy sensors in stacks
- Friends fall book sale raised $19,173. Total proceeds from all 12 book sales are now more than $202,000. The revenue provides much of the group’s operating capital for their lecture, visiting scholars, volunteer, and grants to libraries programs as well as substantial contributions toward publication of the full-color magazine, Libraries, which is sent to 10,000 readers.
The grants-to-libraries program provides funds for projects and acquisitions of libraries across the campus; last year more than $15,000 was distributed to sixteen libraries and departments. Four researchers received grants to use the collections through the visiting scholars program. Link to photos from the book sale
- Memorial Library stacks and group study rooms will now be equipped with occupancy sensors to turn on the lights when a person enters an area. These sensors are controlled by motion or heat. The lights will generally be activated when a user enters the stack aisle, but vary in the duration they remain on and how easily they are triggered.
25 YEARS AGO IN THE LIBRARIES
~ Kurt F. Wendt Library dedication- In October, the Engineering Library was dedicated and named in honor of Kurt F. Wendt (1906-1982), dean emeritus of the College of Engineering. The new building was described as, "handsome, spacious and well-planned."
