• Women & Learning, a lecture series by three nationally known UW-Madison scholars, begins Wednesday, Oct. 10. The lectures, sponsored by the Friends of the UW-Madison Libraries, sample women’s scholarship in literature, science, and history.

  The opening lecture, “Renée Lang: A 'Little Lady's' Labor of Love,” will be given by Biruté Ciplijauskaité, Bascom Professor of Spanish emerita. Her talk features insight into the life and literary achievements of Renée Lang. Lang is professor emerita of Comparative Literature at Marquette University and was the first chair of the Marquette University Women’s Studies program. At home in Switzerland, France, Italy, and the United States, Lang writes and publishes in four languages. The talk by Ciplijauskaité will be at 4:30 p.m. in the Department of Special Collections, 976 Memorial Library. An exhibit in Special Collections from the Renée Lang Collection will complement the lecture. Link to more information about the lecture series

• The Friends semiannual fall book sale will begin with a preview sale on Wednesday, Oct. 17, in room 116 Memorial Library. The regular sale will be Oct. 18-20, also in room 116. More than 15,000 books on almost any subject will be on sale. Proceeds from the sale fund Friends programs, as well as grants to UW-Madison libraries and to visiting scholars. • The UW-Madison Libraries are taking steps to curb expenditures for expensive research journals. The effort spearheads the first cooperative effort across the entire University of Wisconsin System to cancel high-cost journal subscriptions.

  In a letter to faculty, scientists and researchers, Libraries Director Ken Frazier explains that the cuts are necessary because library budgets will remain flat during the next biennium, while the cost of library materials continues to increase.

  Cost-effective alternatives are being introduced to ensure the availability of information to researchers. One such alternative is electronic delivery for journal articles through a newly expanded service called Library Express, which delivers electronic versions of journal articles directly to the user's computer. • The Multitype Advisory Library Committee (MALC) of the South Central Library System (SCLS) is sponsoring a free fall walking tour on the UW-Madison Campus, Tuesday, Oct. 16. The walk will tour Allen Centennial Gardens and F. B. Power Pharmaceutical Library from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Gerri Wanserski, head of the Pharmacy Library, will host the library tour. • Cate Cooney, digital projects librarian for the Chipstone decorative arts and material culture program, left the UW-Madison Libraries for a new position at Princeton University. Cooney coordinated the digital library for the decorative arts and material culture in partnership with the Chipstone Foundation in Milwaukee. The digital library is a collection of electronic resources for the study and research of decorative arts, focusing on early America. In New Jersey, Cooney has accepted a librarian position at Princeton's Marquand Library of Art and Archaeology. Her last day was Sept. 20. LINK to pictures from her going-away party
• Blaire Bundy, a GLS librarian at Memorial Library, recently began working for DoIT’s Learning Technologies and Distance Education Group. In this newly created position, Bundy will focus primarily on faculty and staff training as it relates to Web design, development and accessibility. Bundy started his new job at the beginning of September.
• Kerry Gleason, project assistant in Library Instruction, was recently awarded two scholarships. One scholarship is from the Busjaeger Fund in SLIS and the other is the ProQuest Scholarship from the ALA. Gleason began library school this fall.
• Christopher Hooper-Lane is the new information services reference coordinator at Health Sciences. Hooper-Lane was most recently an access and delivery services librarian at the same library. He began his new job at the end of August.
• Bob Hacker, Memorial Library security officer, is recuperating following surgery last week. He is not expected to return to work until the end of October. In the interim, Dineen Grow, Tom Hefko, Catherine Vitale, and Deb Schafer, all Access Services staff, will pick up Hacker’s opening schedule for weekdays. Dennis Trest, another Access Services employee, was called to active duty in late September. Due to the unexpected absence of two employees, the Access Services Staff is asking offices to help deliver materials across campus. • Larry Ashmun is the new South/Southeast Asian Studies bibliographer in Memorial Library. Before coming to the UW-Madison Libraries, Ashmun worked at Chiang Mai University in Thailand as an information services manager. He has also worked as the coordinator of TeachAsia in the education division of the Asia Society. Ashmun holds a master’s in information/library science from Northern Illinois University and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Beloit College. Ashmun’s office is located in 412A Memorial Library. He began work at the end of August.

LIBRARY NEWS

• The Health Sciences Libraries Web Site recently underwent a facelift to provide easier navigation. Visually, the site is noticeably different because it has changed from red to blue. In addition, there is now a list of classes on the home page, replacing the “highlights” section. The new site also emphasizes instructional activities and the historical collections held by the libraries. • College Library, housed in Helen C. White Hall, recently dedicated a Web site to the building's namesake, the first woman full professor in the university’s College of Letters and Science. The Helen Constance White Web site includes a biography of White, who received her doctorate in English and taught in the same department at the UW-Madison. It also includes career highlights, information about her writings, books, articles, and reviews, sources for additional information, and links to other relevant sites about White. Kirstin Dougan, a project assistant in College Library created the site.
• Poet Charles Cantrell wrestles with the lingering effects of his father's alcoholism in Cicatrix, the latest chapbook release from the Parallel Press. In this personal 21-piece collection, Cantrell exposes a childhood tainted by addiction and violence. LINK to more information about Cantrell and the latest chapbook.
