Elwyn Weible retired May 23 from Memorial Library after nearly 38 years in the Circulation Department. He was hired by the former head of Circulation, Ethel Lynaugh, and Gerhard Naeseth the former associate library director.

Tracy Honn of the Silver Buckle Press currently has an exhibit on display on the second floor of Memorial Library. The exhibit, titled “Celebrating Books,” features books selected by students in the Art Department studio class, “Art of the Printed Book” taught by Honn. The exhibit features the students’ finds from the Memorial Library stacks and represents an important, though perhaps underrated, library activity: browsing. The exhibit is on display through June.

Gerhard Naeseth, former associate director of UW-Madison Libraries, will be honored posthumously by the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in Decorah, Iowa. Naeseth (1913-1994) founded and operated the Vesterheim Genealogical Center in Madison for 18 years from his home. The Decorah museum will name its Chair for Publications for him.

Academic Librarian William Byrne and Acquisitions Head Karl Debus, both of CTS, will present a poster session at this summer'sALA Conference titled, "Innovations in Rush Order Processing."
Richard Reeb, assistant director for CTS and Debus will be teaching at the ALA Business of Acquisitions Conference. Reeb's class is titled "Migrating Acquisitions Data to a New System," and Debus's class is titled "New ILS Implementation and Data Migration: The Final Step - Training your Staff."
Tanner Wray, head of Access Services in Memorial Library and Judith Tuohy of Interlibrary Loan will present a poster session on improvements in UW-Madison's interlibrary loan services titled "Improving Patron Service in Interlibrary Borrowing, a Case Study." Heather Ballestad, a public services librarian in Memorial Library, and Brian Beecher, a reference librarian at Clinical Science Center Library, co-authored the presentation.
Electronic Resources Librarian Aimee Glassel will be presenting at the ALA Conference on "Subject Access and Classification in Metadata for Digital Resources."

Heidi Marleau accepted a new position in the Health Sciences Libraries as the information services outreach librarian. This position is split evenly between outreach activities and information services duties. Marleau began the new position this month. Her office is in the Middleton Health Sciences Library.

LIBRARY NEWS

American decorative arts have taken up digital residence in the UW–Madison Libraries as part of a partnership with the Chipstone Foundation in Milwaukee. Users of the Web site can browse more than 500 digital facsimiles of color plates and text or they may search for specific terms and pages. Full Story

Poet Carl Lindner engages readers with word play and witty fun in Eat & Remember, the thirteenth chapbook of the Parallel Press. Lindner weaves threads of self-examination, parables for living and gentle iconoclasm with clearly recognizable images in this 17-piece collection. Francine Conley, author of the Parallel Press chapbook How Dumb the Stars, will read selections from her book Friday, June 15. Conley earned her Ph.D. in French literature and theater at the UW-Madison. The poetry reading will be held at A Room of One's Own, 307 W. Johnson St.

In the wake of Lou Pitschmann’s upcoming departure from the UW-Madison Libraries, the GLS will undergo administrative changes effective July 1. In the interim while a search for a new associate director for collection development is conducted, Sandy Pfahler will take over Pitschmann’s administrative responsibilities. Ed Van Gemert will take on Pfahler’s responsibilities as associate director for public services and will continue to chair the Memorial Management Group.

The Pharmacy Library reopened on June 11 after several weeks moving into its new location at 2202 Rennebohm Hall. The new library is located in the new School of Pharmacy Building at 777 Highland Ave., near Parking Lot 60. Summer hours are Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.; closed Saturday and Sunday. Memorial Library Room 124 was opened to the public after several months of remodeling on May 9. This state-of-the-art quiet study room provides Internet access to students with laptops. The room is furnished with solid cherry tables and chairs by Thomas Moser Cabinet Makers of Auburn, Maine. Motion detectors control the room lighting and turn on when people enter the room. The remodeling of Rooms 124 and 126 was funded by the Parents Enrichment Fund of the UW Foundation. Plans for the west corridor also includes remodeling Room 112. This room will undergo construction this summer to accommodate a late-night study hall. LINK to pictures of the rooms

The Chemistry Library is undergoing remodeling this summer. The collection is currently inaccessible due to asbestos abatement and floor leveling within the library. The collection should be available by the end of June with limited services and an alternative entrance. If journal articles are not available in another library on campus or electronically, patrons may obtain them through Interlibrary Loan or the staff can order the article through vendors. Staff offices have been relocated to room 2365 of the Chemistry Building. Staff will be working all summer to move the collections in boxes. The office hours for the library are Monday-Friday 9 a.m to 4 p.m. CLICK HERE for up-to-date information about the remodeling project.

William Byrne has been promoted to academic librarian. He is now the head of the Order Unit in the Acquisitions and Serials Department of the Central Technical Services Division.
Maureen Grant is now the associate information processing consultant within the Acquisitions and Serials Department of the CTS Division.
Manuela Nitti has been promoted to academic librarian. She is now head of the Fiscal Unit in the Acquisitions and Serials Department of the CTS Division.

The Binding Department will be integrated into the Acquisitions and Serials Department of CTS effective July 1. This change will merge the bindery staff with the Check-in Unit, to be renamed the Check-in/Binding Unit, managed by Yvonne Lee. Louise Coates will continue to supervise four staff members in charge of preparing materials for the commercial binder and for in-house pam binding. The Binding Department is currently a part of the Collection Development, Maintenance, and Preservation Division.

20 YEARS AGO IN THE LIBRARIES

~ UW-Madison Libraries receive grant for the Silver Buckle Press

The libraries secured a grant from the Brittingham Foundation for the Silver Buckle Press 20 years ago. The grant provided an extra staff position, money to buy a new type compatible with existing typefaces in the collection that would allow the press to do printing for the chancellor. The grant also funded a committee to consider taking on special projects in the campus community.
