Bread Upon the Waters

About this project...

BREAD UPON THE WATERS was created for the University of Wisconsin Foundation's 6th Biennial Forum on Women and Philanthropy by Betty Ferris (bferris@library.wisc.edu) of UW-Madison Library Communications, and was first presented on October 25, 2001 at The Pyle Center on the UW-Madison campus. It was staged as a live performance with two narrators: Robin Douthit, dean of the School of Human Ecology; Mary Anne Fitzpatrick, associate dean for the Social Sciences in the College of Letters and Science.

The title of the show is drawn from Maya Angelou's 'Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey Now':

"When we cast our bread upon the waters, we can presume that someone downstream, whose face we will never know, will benefit from our action."
Material in this presentation was obtained from University Archives, UW-Madison Libraries, the Wisconsin State Historical Society, University Communications, the Nelson-Ferris Collection, and the Dells Country Historical Society Museum.

Lori Rappe, University of Wisconsin Foundation staff to the Women's Philanthropy Council, was a driving force behind the development of the show. Other University of Wisconsin Foundation staff who contributed to the process are: Martha Taylor, Niki Graham, and Linda Halsey.

Andrew Wallmeyer, Kat Grayson and Don Johnson of UW-Madison Library Communications oversaw the adaptation of this slide show for the World Wide Web.
