Parallel Press Author Max Garland Named Wisconsin’s Poet Laureate

January 7, 2013

Congratulations are due to Max Garland, who was named Poet Laureate by the Wisconsin Academy on Januray 3rd!

Garland teaches creative writing and literature courses at UW-Eau Claire, and has won numerous awards for his writing, including a National Endowment for the Arts poetry fellowship, a Jay C. and Ruth Halls Poetry Fellowship from the University of Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing, and two Wisconsin Arts Board literary fellowships.

Garland’s poems, stories and essays have appeared in many literary journals and anthologies; in addition to his two full length poetry collections (The Postal Confessions and Hunger Wide As Heaven), he also published a chapbook of poems titled Apparition through Parallel Press in 1999.

During his tenure as poet laureate, he will travel the state of Wisconsin to talk about the value of the arts to educational and cultural programming, and to help Wisconsinites grow as readers and writers.
