Shifting Scores, Shifting Shelves

Mills Music Library has the same finite space constraints facing all libraries, so we recently decided to reconfigure our stacks (fancy library term for shelves) and shift the boundaries of what we affectionately refer to as “the cage.” The cage is the staff-only area where we keep our Locked Case materials, LPs, back issues of bound periodicals, Wisconsin Music Archives, various other Special Collections, and thousands of 78s–and even one librarian*!

We have rearranged the contents of the cage over the summer, and opened up a small shelving cove to house our Oversize ML and MT books, and our M1-M3 scores. We shifted the M1-M3 scores to free up shelf space for us to shift the entire circulating score collection toward the front of the stacks, which will make it easier for patrons to retrieve scores while browsing and make it possible for us to continue developing our collection. As always, if you don’t find what you’re looking for in the stacks, please let us know and we’ll help you track it down! We invite everyone to come see the new configuration, and to let us know what you think.
