Overview

This page links to journals and magazines by/for women, including a few "traditional" women's magazines that emphasize beauty, fashion, and dieting. Web pages of periodicals vary considerably. Most describe the publications and provide recent tables of contents, subscription information, and sample articles in full-text. Some are online 'zines with no print equivalent. Women-Focused Magazines and Newsletters on the Web

If you are affiliated with University of Wisconsin-Madison, you may want to try the Libraries' E-Journal Title List, which you'll find links to periodicals to which the University Libraries subscribe. The links on the page below are to free sites, which may offer sample articles, but usually not full issues.

Web pages of periodicals vary considerably. Most describe the publications and provide recent tables of contents, subscription information, and sample articles in full-text. AMEWS Review is from the Association for Middle East Women's Studies.

Abafazi was the Simmons College Journal of Women of African Descent [noticed defunct, April, 2006]

Action Girl Online features Sarah Dyer's cartoons and more.

Advancing Women in Leadership is an electronic refereed journal on women's professional issues.

Affilia is a journal of women and social work.

African Gender Institute Newsletter comes from University of Capetown, South Africa. See also Feminist Africa.

African Journal of Reproductive Health site contains abstracts of the articles, occasional links to free articles online, and instructions on purchasing others.[Note: if you are a university student, consult your campus library before paying for an article. Your library may provide it to you at no charge.]

Agenda is a South African feminist journal.

Ahfad Journal comes from Sudan. Site includes tables of contents.

Al Raida is from the Institute for Women's Studies in the Arab World, Lebanese American University, Beirut. Site has fulltext articles.

AnaLize is a Romanian journal of feminist studies.

Angles is about women working in film and video. Site has tables of contents.

Aphra Behn Society Newsletter "celebrates women in the arts 1660-1830."

Ariadne Newsletter is an annotated list (in German) of new acquisitions in women's studies from the Austrian National Library.

Arizona Women's News focuses on business/professional women in Arizona (not working May 2003).

Asian Journal of Women's Studies is published by Ewha Womans University's Asian Center for Women's Studies, South Korea. Site includes tables of contents, plus some articles.

Atlantis: A Women's Studies Journal comes from the Institute for the Study of Women, Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Site features a table of contents and excerpt from the introduction to the journal.

Avaye Zan (Iranian Women's Voice) is in Persian and English.

Auf comes or came from Austria (in German). Ceased? Not found August-September, 2005.

Australian Feminist Studies site includes tables of contents; registrants can also access a sample issue.

AWIS Magazine comes from the Association for Women in Science.

Azizah is a magazine for "contemporary Muslim women."

Bad Jens is an Iranian feminist newsletter mainly directed at readers outside Iran. "Jen" means gender and bad means bad. The term 'badjens' is usually spelled as one word, and means "disreputable", or "sly".

Bamboo Girl 'zine.

Bang is a feminist magazine from Sweden (in Swedish).

Berkeley Journal of Gender, Law and Justice (formerly Berkeley Women's Law Journal) webpage has tables of contents.

Big Boots was a zine about "resistance on paper, about the power of silent words and art to inspire change, about women of colour reclaiming their voices and telling their own stories." [noticed defunct as of April, 2006]

Bitch Magazine offers a "feminist response to pop culture." Site includes tables of content from the print publication.

Bizwomen is a magazine for women in business. Access to most of the site requires (free) registration.

Blau comes from Berlin (in German). Site has many articles in fulltext.

Blue Jean Magazine "where young women unite to change the world" ceased as a print publication, but was replaced with Blue Jean Online, Sherry Handel's site.

BMC Women's Health is an electronic journal from BioMed Central. It publishes "original research articles in all aspects of the prevention, diagnosis and management of gynaecological, fertility, and breast disorders, as well as related molecular genetics, pathophysiology, and epidemiology."

Revista La Boletina is from Asociación de Mujeres Para La Salud (de Madrid). Click on "publicaciones," then on "La Boletina."

Canadian Woman Studies/les cahiers de la femme site includes tables of contents.

Catt's Claws is an electronic feminist newsletter covering domestic violence and other topics.

Center for Women Policy Studies News

Chatelaine Canadian women's magazine offers selections from the current print issue, opportunities to participate in threaded conversations, and "Internet 101," a beginner's guide to the Internet.

ChickLit is a zine that offers book reviews, an online book club, interviews with novelists, rants about misused words and bad grammar, etc.

Chrone Chronicles older women's magazine includes sample articles.

Collective Voices is the only national newspaper addressing reproductive health created and distributed by and for women of color." From SisterSong, this publication is available in print or at no charge in pdf.

Columbia Journal of Gender and Law site has tables of contents and abstracts.

Commitment is an online self-help magazine for women.

The Compleat Mother is a magazine for pregnancy, birth, and breasfeeding.

Common Concern is a quarterly magazine from the World Young Women's Christian Association. Issues are thematic; recent ones have focused on gender and trade liberalization and young women and HIV/AIDS.

Connect! is an e-zine from the South Asian Women's Forum (SAWF), with news, fiction, poetry, reviews, household tips, and more.

Concerning Women is an "e-zine presenting information-based features geared to women that is both timely and relevant through multimedia or mass communication on topics such as health, alternative medicine, fitness, finance, business environment, working mothers, etc."

CSW Update is the newsletter of the UCLA Center for the Study of Women.

CWGL Newsletter is from the Center for Women's Global Leadership, Rutgers University

Curve is a stylish lesbian magazine.

CyberGrrlz was an opinion e-zine. Site is now Purple Pyjamas: "an online community for girls (and smart boys)."

CW3: Corvey Women Writers on the Web is a peer-reviewed online forum for research into Romantic-era writing by women (1796-1834), from Sheffield Hallam University.

The Daily Diva is "the magazine of fashion, music, culture, and fine women of color."

Dandelion Magazine is a women's magazine about "living life to its fullest through outdoor experiences that will refresh your body and soul."

Daughters is for parents of girls, from the publishers of New Moon, a magazine for girls [link to Daughters not working 8/2008]

Dawn, English-language newsletter of the Osaka, Japan, Women's Center.

Differences: A Journal of Feminist Cultural Studies' site has descriptions of special issues.

Digital Women is an "international online community for women in business."

Diva is "Europe's only mainstream lesbian magazine."

Div@zine is (or was) a feminist zine from Belgium. In Dutch (Flemish) [site not working 8/2008]

Dossier is an irregularly published periodical from Women Living Under Muslim Laws. The issues "explore and synthesize a broad range of feelings, interpretations and strategies of women on issues of feminism, nationalism, internationalism, and religion."

Duke Journal of Gender Law & Policy, from Duke University Law School, includes all articles in fulltext.

ENUT News is a newsletter in English from the Estonian Women's Studies and Resource Center, Tallinn Pedagogical University.

Electronic Journal of Human Sexuality is from the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality, San Francisco, CA

Elle has sections on beauty, models, health, astrology, and finance.

Engendering Peace (scroll to find the individually listed issues) was a newsletter from the Gender and Peacebuilding Programme of International Alert, an independent, international non-governmental organization that "works to help build lasting peace in countries and communities affected or threatened by violent conflict." Publication not found August-September, 2005. Presumed ceased.

ESRC Gender Equality Network Newsletter from the Economic and Social Research Council (UK)

Essence's site contains many articles from this popular African American women's magazine.

European Journal of Women's Studies explores "explore the meaning and impact of gender within the changing concept of 'Europe'." Site includes tables of contents and abstracts.

European Women's Lobby (EWL) Newsflash . "EWL's goal is to achieve equality of women and men in Europe and to serve as a link between political decision-makers and women's organisations at EU level."

Executive Female is the former name of NAFE Magazine Online, a women's career and business magazine published bimonthly by the National Association for Female Executives (NAFE). Sample articles are accessible to anyone; the rest is members only.

EXTRA!, the magazine of FAIR, includes many articles focussing on the media's portrayal of, and impact on, women. Use the Women's Desk section to see a list of all the articles analyzing sexism, racism and homophobia in the media.

The F Word is a feminist site from the UK with book reviews, news, and features.

The F-Word: A Collection of Feminist Voices is a literary journal from University of Pennsylvania.

Fat! So? is a zine for "people who don't apologize for their size." Editor and most contributors are women.

FAWE Newsletter is from the Forum for African Women Educationalists. It covers issues concerned with the education of women and girls.

Fem is Los Angeles' feminist news magazine.

Femina from India includes feature stories, poetry, and profiles on Indian women.

Feminism and Nonviolence Studies, formerly Studies in Prolife Feminism, is an anti-abortion publication (through 2000).

Feminism & Psychology site includes tables of content.

Feminist Africa is an electronic journal launched in 2002 by the African Gender Institute's Gender and Women's Studies Project, University of Capetown, South Africa.

Feminist Collections, a quarterly on women's studies resources, is published by the University of Wisconsin System Women's Studies Librarian's Office. Tables of content and occasional articles are mounted on the site.

Feminist Economics site provides tables of contents for this academic journal started in 1995.

Feminist Europa Review of Books publishes reviews in English of books in European languages.

Feminist Legal Studies site contains contents and abstracts of older issues. Newer issues are from Springer.

The Feminist Majority Report is the newsletter of the Feminist Majority Foundation.

Feminist Review site includes tables of contents.

Feminist Studies, from the Univ. of Maryland Dept. of Women's Studies, provides a forum for feminist analysis, debate and exchange. The site has tables of contents and prefaces to several issues.

Feminist Studies in English Literature is from the Korean Society for Feminist Studies in English Literature.

Feminist Teacher includes current and past tables of contents.

Feminist Theory site includes tables of contents.

Feminista! was a San Francisco-based online journal of essays, editorials, fiction, poetry, interviews, and book and movie reviews [domain for sale 8/2008]

FEMNET News is from the African Women's Development and Communication Network.

Fempower is a periodical from Women Against Violence Europe.

FEMSPEC is a feminist science fiction journal published at Cleveland State University.

Femtap: a Journal of Feminist Theory and Practice is a "a graduate and doctorate refereed journal" published online only.

Fierce Magazine "... was a "revolutionary magazine for all women over 21 (and young, smart, edgy chicks over 18). We have a definite urban and multi-cultural spin, and we deliver articles from a women’s point of view with undeniable style, funk and wit...Fierce celebrates the multitude of voices and writing styles of young women around the country." [noticed defunct as of April, 2006]

Le Fil D'Ariane , now the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality Newsletter, is the newsletter of the European Parliament's Committee on Women's Rights and Equal Opportunities (as of Sept., 2005, there only were issues through May, 2004.)

FMST: Feminist Studies in Aotearoa was from New Zealand and has been discontinued (2004).

Focus is published by the Institute for Research on Poverty, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Many articles concern the implemention of welfare reform in Wisconsin and its effects on women and children. Articles are in pdf format.

The Freedom Socialist is the newspaper of the Freedom Socialist Party, a "a revolutionary, socialist feminist organization, dedicated to the replacement of capitalist rule by a genuine workers' democracy."

Frontiers: A Journal of Women's Studies is published by the University of Nebraska Press.

Full Court Press is a women's basketball journal.

GAATW, the Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women, has both an E-bulletin and a The Alliance News (scroll to it)

GAD Exchange is a Gender and Development newsletter produced by Women In Development Southern Africa Awareness (WIDSAA), the gender programme of Southern African Research and Documentation Centre (SARDC).

Garden State Woman covers finance, health, career, and  other subjects of interest to women in New Jersey.

Gay and Lesbian Issues and Psychology Review is an electronic journal from the Australian Psychological Society

GW Review is the newsletter of the George Washington University Women's Studies Program and has issues up to fall 2002.

Geekgirl from Australia has changed from a "cyberfeminist zine" to a site doing "memes;" a link from the site leads to numerous articles defining memes and memetics.

Gender and Behaviour is an African journal that covers psychological and behavioral aspects of gender. Gender Policy Review is a monthly magazine "geared toward policy professionals and individuals interested in gender and international, development and domestic politics."

Gender, rovné prílezitosti, vyzkum is an electronic journal in Czech.

Gender, Work and Organization

Genderinfo and Gender News were newsletters that came from units of the International Labour Organization. See the Bureau for Gender Equality webpage instead.

Gendernye Issledovaniâ is published by the Kharkov Center for Gender Studies, Ukraine. Articles are in Russian. An English page describes the journal, whose title translates to "Gender Studies."

Genders has become an entirely electronic journal, with no subscription fee.

Generation Woman was an interactive news magazine. It may have been replaced by a blog, also not current.

GirlComic.Net is "feminist.funny."

Girlistic Magazine: "your ultimate feminist resource" is an e-magazine that started in 2006.

Girlphyte is a monthly webzine for the exchange of ideas to foster acceptance, self-confidence, and success.

Girl-Mom writings by/about teen mothers.

A Girl's World: "where girls and teens rule the web" is an e-zine for girls 7-17.

Girlfriends: The Magazine of Lesbian Enjoyment covers culture, politics, and sexuality from a lesbian perspective.

Global Women's Strike newsletters are available on the website of Global Women's Strike, an international effort for pay equity, payment for all caring work, and other demands.

Globalizacija.com : Journal for Political Theory and Research on Globalisation, Development and Gender Issues (English home) from the Women's Center for Democracy & Human Rights, based in Subotica, Serbia and Montenegro.

Goddess Alive! is a "new magazine of goddess celebration" from the U.K. Issue 1 appeared in Winter 2001-2. A couple of articles/issue are available on the website.

Godey's Lady's Book Online reproduces issues of a popular nineteenth century women's magazine.

gURL is a lively look at girl culture.

Guttmacher Report on Public Policy comes from an institute that focuses on sexual and reproductive health research, policy analysis and public education.

HA! is a zine with "punchiness," compiled by the Lilith Collective. a group of women linving in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Happy Woman is a parody of traditional women's magazines.

The Harvard Women's Health Watch "seeks to clarify many of the issues surrounding women's health and to provide concise, accurate information to help readers make informed decisions about their own care."

Harvard Journal of Law & Gender site has all articles online from this annual from volume 26 (Spring 2003) onward (formerly Harvard Women's Law Journal)

Health Care for Women International site includes tables of content, plus an online sample issue.

Hastings Women's Law Journal site contains tables of contents, some summaries, and an occasional article in full text.

Her Circle EZine is an "online literary journal featuring the works of women from around the globe on topics related to women and culture."

Herizons, a Canadian feminist periodical, includes tables of contents and sample articles on its site.

Hecate's Australian Women's Book Review

Hip Mama 'zine offers an online forum, tips on sex and pregnancy, and other advice.

History's Women online magazine, "written from a Christian worldview," emphasizes women who have made signficant contributions to society.

HOW2 is "dedicated to exploring non-traditional directions in poetry and scholarship by women." It is hosted at Bucknell University.

Hygeia: An Online Journal for Pregnancy and Neonatal Loss combines technical reviews by physicians with poems and stories of grieving, loss, and hope.

Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy site includes tables of contents.

IAWA Newsletter is from the International Archive of Women in Architecture, housed at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

IAWM Journal is from the International Alliance for Women in Music. The site has a description of the publication.

ICW News is a quarterly from the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (scroll to listing of issues available in pdf).

IHRSINN is eine radikalfeministische Lesbenzeitschrift (radical feminist lesbian periodical) in German. It is also available in English.

IIAV International News comes from the International Information Centre and Archives for the Women's Movement (IIAV), Amsterdam.

Impressions is a an e-zine "designed for professional, college-educated women." The current issue is available in pdf when launced from www.pawprintspubsonline.com.

Indigenous Woman Magazine is from the Indigenous Women's Network. Site includes sample feature articles.

InterMountain WOMAN included interviews, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, art, and photography [site gone, Feb. 2005]

International Alliance of Women Newsletter, Newsflashes, and Action Sheets The IAW began in 1902 as the International Alliance of Women for Suffrage and Legal Citizenship. The IAW supports full and equal rights for women through passage of CEDAW and other measures. Current efforts involve preparation for the Fifth World Conference on Women in 2005.

International Council of Jewish Women Newsletter.

International Family Planning Perspectives is from the Alan Guttmacher Institute, which focuses on sexual and reproductive health research, policy analysis and public education.

International Federation for Research in Women's History/Federation Internationale Pour La Recherche En Histoire Des Femmes Newsletter. "The Aim of IFRWH/FIRHF is to encourage and coordinate research in all aspects of women's history at the international level, by promoting exchange of information and publication and by arranging and assisting in arranging large-scale international conferences as well as more restricted and specialized meetings."

International Feminist Journal of Politics is a forum at the intersection of international relations, politics, and women's studies.

International Journal of Transgenderism contains articles on numerous aspects of gender identity.

International Woman is structured like traditional women's magazines with sections on  beauty, health, relationships, recipes, etc., adding a round-up of articles and short stories from around the world.

Intersections: Gender, History and Culture in the Asian Context is a refereed electronic journal from Murdoch Univ., Perth, Western Australia.

Intersections: Women's and Gender Studies in Review Across Disciplines is from the Center for Women's and Gender Studies, University of Texas at Austin. Beginning with Issue # 3 (2005) on "Wonder Woman?! Transformations of Gender and Power in a New Age" the issues are downloadable in their entirety.

Iris: A Journal About Women's site has images of issue covers.

Irish Feminist Review is published by the National University of Ireland-Galway.

Issues! The Magazine for Lesbians of Color site lists the table of contents. (Site not working May, 2003).

IRWG Newsletter is from the Institute for Research on Women and Gender, University of Michigan.

IWPR Quarterly Newsletter is from the Institute for Women's Policy Research.

Jade Magazinee is for Asian women, mostly on beauty, relationships, and issues.It "strives to be the voice of English-speaking Asian women around the world by creating a forum to shatter the myths that exist about us, as well as providing a needed medium for the open discussion of our views, ideas and concerns."

JAMWA: Journal of the American Medical Women's Association site contains tables of contents and some abstracts.

Jane Magazine has sections on beauty, fashion, "dish," and" real life."

JENdA: A Journal of African Women Studies is an electronic journal from the Africa Resource Center.

Jewish Woman is the magazine of Jewish Women International organization. It celebrates Jewish women's lives and accomplishments and explores spirituality.

JOFA Journal is the quarterly newsletter of the Jewish Orthodox Feminist Alliance.

Journal for Political Theory and Research on Globalization, Development and Gender Issues is produced by the Women's Centre for Democracy and Human Rights, baased in Serbia and Montenegro. The publication is in Serbian and English.

Journal of Feminist Family Therapy site contains tables of contents and abstracts.

Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion site contains tables of contents, plus editors' introductions to individual issues.

Journal of Gender Issues in Art and Education is a publication of The Women's Caucus of the National Art Education Association (NAEA WC).Beginning with v. 4. (2006), it's a freely available online peer-reviewed annual.

Journal of Gender, Social Policy and the Law is from the Washington College of Law, American University. Site includes excerpts (in pdf).

Journal of International Women's Studies is housed at Bridgewater State College. It is an "on-line, peer reviewed journal that provides a forum for scholars, activists, and students to explore the relationship between feminist theory and various forms of organizing".

Journeywoman Online is an e-zine for women who travel.

Kalliope is a journal of women's literature and art. Site has tables of content and occasional articles or other content.

The Kapralova Society Journal, is an online publication devoted to Czech composer Vitezlava Kapralova and other women in music.

Kruh & Ruže (Bread and Roses) comes from Zagreb. Click on the cover pictures to access the tables of contents and English summaries of articles.

Kvinneforskning, a Norwegian journal for women's research (in Norwegian) has changed its name to Tidsskrift for kjønnsforskning (Journal of Gender Research). Site includes a short description in English.

Kvinnovetenskaplig Tidskrift is a transdisciplinary quarterly on current issues and questionsn in gender studies. Articles are in Swedish.

L'Homme: Europäische Zeitschrift für Feministische Geschichtswissenschaft is an Austrian feminist journal. Site includes tables of content and a few articles.

Labyrinth: an International Journal for Philosophy, Feminist Theory and Cultural Hermeneutics is a peer-reviewed journal published at the Institut für Axiologische Forschungen (IAF), Vienna, Austria [nothing since 2001 on the site, however, as of 8/2008]

Ladies Home Journal site includes sample articles, covers, etc.

The Ladies' Repository, 1841-1876, a "monthly periodical, devoted to literature, arts, and religion," has been digitized as part of the Univ. of Michigan Making of America Project.

The Lady. Online home of Britain's oldest weekly traditional women's magazine.

Latina Magazine has news and features of interest to Latinas.

Latina Style Magazine bills itself as a "national magazine for contemporary Hispanic women."

Latinitas webzine for Latinas have separate magazines for girls and one for teens.

Law and Sexuality: a Review of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Legal Issues is from Tulane Law School. Site has tables of contents.

Leather Spinsters is an ezine for happily unmarried women.

Lectio difficilior is a multi-lingual European journal for feminist Biblical exegesis.

Legacy is a journal about American women writers.

Lesbian News Online site includes sample articles.

Lens: Research on Women and Public Policy at Harvard reviews ongoing scholarship at Harvard (site gone, May 2003)

Lespress is a lesbian magazine from Germany (in German).

Lilith: The Independent Jewish Women's Magazine
