What is an e-journal?

An e-journal is an online equivalent of a print journal. It provides the full-text of articles, usually in PDF or HTML format. There are many e-journals the UW-Madison Libraries license (e.g. pay for) and they are discoverable through the Library Catalog or through the E-Journal Title List.

How can I get access to an e-journal?

You can access e-journals by:

What’s included in the E-Journal List?

You’ll find entries for over 96,000 full-text e-journals, magazines, newsletters and newspapers licensed by the UW-Madison Libraries for UW-Madison students, faculty and staff. The list does not include those journals that have only tables of contents and/or abstracts but does include some titles available freely on the web.

All e-journals on the web are free, right?

No – most of the e-journals that we have access to are not free. Subscriptions to e-journals are paid for by UW-Madison Libraries or, in some cases, with other UW System schools or as part of a State of Wisconsin program called BadgerLink. Some are free on the web or are free on a trial basis.

What if I can’t find the journal title or year that I want online?

Not all journals have all of their content available online and some journals are available only in print in campus libraries. Here’s what to do:

Who can use the e-journals?

Our licensed e-journals are authorized for use by the UW-Madison community and access is restricted to UW-Madison IP addresses. Authorized users include current faculty, staff, and students at UW-Madison and members of the general public who use the workstations provided in campus libraries. E-journals which are freely available on the web can be used by anyone.

I’m a visitor on campus. Can I access e-journals?

You can access most of our licensed resources, including e-journals, on campus. You cannot access them from off-campus unless you have a current UW-Madison appointment.

How may I submit a request to the UW-Madison Libraries to subscribe to an e-journal?

Please fill out a Purchase Recommendation Form and we will consider your request. You may also contact a Subject Librarian.
