Common Name:
Wool Grass
Scientific Name:
Scirpus cyperinus L. Kunth
Family:
Sedge (Cyperaceae)
Plant Description:
A perennial, reproducing primarily by stout rootstocks but does produce seed.
Stems are almost round in appearance (uncharacteristic of sedges) and very smooth.
Plants reach a height of 1-5 feet. The fruit has a reddish to brown color and
a fuzzy or woolly appearance.
Remarks:
This plant is not a grass, but actually is a sedge. It is common in sedge meadows,
particularly those occurring in northern Wisconsin. It can frequently be found
in bogs and marshes throughout the state. In cranberry marshes, it can be found
in wetland areas adjacent to cranberry beds. It may be an occasional invader
of new and established beds.
