Common Name:
Smoke Grass
Scientific Name:
Muhlenbergia uniflora Muhl. Fern.
Family:
Grass (Gramineae)
Plant Description:
A perennial grass often growing to a height of 6-18 inches. The plant reproduces
by seed and by fibrous roots. In late spring, a cluster of fine, purplish leaves
and stems sprout from rosette leaves (similar to those of a dandelion) which
are hidden among the surrounding vegetation. Flowering occurs during the months
of June-August.
Remarks:
Smoke grass can be found growing in a variety of agricultural crops including
cranberries. It commonly invades new plantings and void areas of established
beds. Seed is often introduced as vine contaminates or by flood waters.
