Common Name:
Yellow Foxtail

Scientific Name:
Setaria lutescens Weigel Hubb.

Family:
Grass (Gramineae)

Plant Description:
Yellow Foxtail is the most prominent of the three species of foxtail that can be found on cranberry marshes in Wisconsin. Giant Foxtail and Green Foxtail are the two other species which are also occasionally observed. All species of foxtail are annual grasses that reproduce from seed. Stems reach from 1-6 feet in height and seed heads range in size from 1/6-1/12 inch depending on the particular species being observed.

Remarks:
Foxtails can occasionally become serious pests in new and established beds. Seed is often introduced by flood waters during harvest or by harvest machinery. Dense stands may interfere with pesticide applications and harvest machines.
