Common Name:
Alsike Clover
Scientific Name:
Trifolium hybridum L.
Family:
Bean (Leguminosae)
Plant Description:
A perennial, sprawling plant with succulent stems reaching a height of 1-3 feet.
Plants have 3 leaves on long petioles. Flowering occurs during the months of
May-August. Flowers begin a white color and turn a pink color during the months
of June and July.
Remarks:
The plant is found commonly on disturbed grounds. In cranberry marshes it can
be found on dikes and along some bed edges. It often is carried into new plantings
as contaminants of vine cuttings. Clover is often associated with soils that
have a high pH (6.0 or greater). A large population of clover in bloom may distract
honeybees during cranberry pollination.
