Organized in 1870, the Association includes in its membership all categories of those participating in or interested in postsecondary education. Publications, conferences, and projects are emphases of its program.

The council, composed of higher educational institutions, educational organizations, and affiliates conducts a broadly-based program fostering education. One of its functions is the administration of the General Education Development examination. Among its publications in higher education is the ACE/Oryx Series in Higher Education.
