Volunteer


In order to provide quality library services for students and faculty, to manage collection resources to support teaching and research, and to increase fund-raising and development activities, the University of Wisconsin-Madison Library is currently seeking volunteers for the following opportunities.   • Technician, Conservation Laboratory

    • Help keep books circulating in their original formats. Learn to repair books and, with appropriate skills, help with complex restorations of 18th- and 19th-century materials.
    • Minimum of two half-days per week, 40 weeks per year.
    • A high level of interest in the work and well-developed hand skills are most important.
  • Guide, Memorial Library Information Desk
    • Be of general assistance to library visitors. Assist patrons with location information of books and journals, resources, and staff. Assist in general activities of Information Desk area.
    • Two hours per week, between 1-5 p.m., Monday - Friday.
    • Good communication skills, willingness to learn about the Library's collections, resources, staff expertise, and the Electronic Library.
  • Technician, Collection Preservation
    • Prepare and collate documents and materials for filming.
    • Produce labels for storage containers.
    • Prepare serials for filming.
    • High level of detailed work involved. Training required.
    • Minimum three hours per week.
  • Iconography Assistant, University Archives
    • Assist iconographer in the identification, labeling, and filing of photographic images of the University of Wisconsin. Work with prints, slides, glass plates, and negatives.
    • Minimum commitment of five hours per week.
    • Interest in the history of the University of Wisconsin essential. Knowledge of the university highly desirable.
  • Technician, Campus Libraries
    • Help keep books circulating in their original formats. Learn to repair books and maintain the collections in campus member libraries.
    • Commitment of one to two hours per week.
    • A high level of interest in the work and well-developed hand skills are most important.
  • Friends' Book Sale
    • Sort and prepare books for the Friends semiannual book sale on a regular basis throughout the year.
    • Assist with shelving, tagging, and selling books the weeks of the semiannual sales.
    • Work hours are flexible.
  • Document Preparation Assistant, Collection Preservation
    • Prepare books for reformatting by close examination of each volume to determine irregularities such as missing, mutilated, or misnumbered pages; stains or marks that obscure text; uneven inking of typeface, or tight binding that may interfere with filming of the material. Document preparation also includes erasure of all marginal markings and underlines that deface the text.
    • Requires ability to work with details and remain focused.
    • Staff will provide training in bibliographic organization, document preparation, and preservation photocopying.
    • Flexible, mutually agreed-upon schedule.
  • Clerical Assistant, Social Work Library
    • Reorganize Vertical File pamphlets, brochures, fact sheets, and clippings, remove material that is outdated or otherwise not useful. Includes labeling folders to reflect current subject headings with cross-references to related materials.
    • No experience necessary. Staff will train.
    • Minimum commitment of two hours per week. Flexible two-hour shifts, preferably in the afternoon.
  • Clerical Assistant, Kohler Art Library
    • Help process gift materials.
    • Assist staff in bibliographic searches.
    • Review materials for damages and lost pages.
    • No experience necessary. Staff will train.
    • Minimum commitment of two hours per week. Flexible two-hour shifts, preferably in the afternoon.
  • Sheet Music Repair, Mills Music Library
    • Perform minor repair work on popular sheet music collection. Brushes and an adhesive are used to apply Japanese tissue paper to any tears in the sheet music. Repaired items are then placed in archival sleeves and labeled with title and composer. Volunteers assist in the sewing of circulating music scores to their binders, stitching the parts, and labeling each score.
    • Volunteers also examine older recordings for cracks or traces of damage. Those with no defects are put into archival sleeves and labeled with the record company name and number.
    • Attention to detail required. Staff will train. Flexible hours available.
