Book Sales

The largest used book sale in Wisconsin, the next one to be held Wednesday through Saturday, October 7-10, 2009, in Memorial Library at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, includes more than 15,000 books covering almost any subject.

The semiannual sales, organized by the Friends of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Library, offer books on almost every subject.

The fall sales are held in conjunction with the Wisconsin Book Festival.

book saleThe sales raise on average nearly $20,000. Money from the sales help fund an annual lecture series, special purchases for the library collections, and a visiting scholar support program.

Nearly 60 volunteers coordinate the event, which draws students, faculty and visitors from around the Midwest. Books for the sale are donated primarily by University of Wisconsin faculty, staff, students and Madison-area residents.

Donated materials cover subjects including American studies, fiction, foreign languages, cooking, physical and biological sciences, computer science, government, political science, law, education, fine arts, self-help, reference, business, social sciences, religion, philosophy, women's studies, and history.

We accept donations for upcoming sales on a continual basis. For details on how to give materials to the book sale, read the section on donations below.

Sales are open to the public and are held in 116 Memorial Library, 728 State St.

Preview sales are held on the Wednesday before a scheduled sale, and require a $5 admission fee. Regular sales have no admission fee and run Thursday through Saturday, with the Saturday sale offering books at $3 per bag (bring your own bag).

To donate materials . . .

The Friends are calling for book, CD and LP record donations, which are tax deductible.

You may donate books by simply leaving them in the "Open Return" book drops at most campus libraries.

Materials also may be dropped off at the Lake Street dock of Memorial Library weekdays, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

They will be added to campus library collections or sold through the Friends book sale to benefit the libraries.

To arrange for a book pickup or for more information, contact the Friends via e-mail or phone at (608) 265-2505.

All gifts of materials support the mission of libraries and are greatly appreciated. Thousands of titles new to the collections, and within the libraries' collecting scope, are added through gifts annually.
