A Little Journey on Skates

by Joseph McClellan Bell
1894

A self-published, first-hand chronicle of a New Year's Day ice skate up the Milwaukee River from the North Avenue Bridge to the village of Thiensville and back. Written and illustrated by two of the skaters, this little period piece features "a group of young fellows from the office", a beautiful day, smooth, black ice, amusing mishaps, Tom & Jerrys, a mid-day feast at the tavern of "a paunchy little publican" and a dazzling, moonlit return.
