Portrait of Bjarni Thorarensen, larger version.

Bjarni Thorarensen (1786-1841). This portrait by Auguste Mayer is the only surviving contemporary likeness; it was made when Bjarni was about 50. But according to Benedikt Gröndal, "Bjarni was a lot uglier than his portrait in the Gaimard expedition's report" (4BGR292).
