Note: URL’s can be opened by either clicking on the link within the record or by using References and Open URL.- Scroll down and click in the URL field.
- Type in the direct URL including the http://
- Additional URLs may be added, each on a separate line.
Link to PDF's
When linking to a PDF of an article you can either choose to link out to that PDF or to insert a copy of the PDF within your EndNote Library
. Linking out would oblige you to copy all related PDF’s when moving your EndNote library to another computer. Inserting a copy of the PDF within EndNote means that all linked PDF’s travel with your EndNote library when they are moved from computer to computer.
Note: Linked or inserted PDF’s can be opened by either clicking on the link within the record or by using References and Open PDF.
To link a file to the Link to PDF field in a reference:
- Select a reference in the Library window, or open the reference.
- From the References menu, choose PDF and Link To PDF.
- Select a file to link to the selected (or open) reference.
- Note the check box along the bottom titled, Copy this file to the default PDF folder and create a relative link. This gives you the option to:
- Select the check box to copy the original PDF file and place the copy in the Data\Pdf folder that is part of your EndNote library.
OR
Deselect the check box to always have EndNote look in the original folder for the inserted file. - Click Open.
EndNote will display an icon indicating the type of file inserted. You can insert approximately 45 files into the same Link to PDF field.
Note : Another way to link a PDF file to the Link to PDF field is to drag and drop the file onto the reference in either the Library window or the Reference window. Whether the file is saved with the database or is linked with an absolute path is determined by the default PDF setting.

Using the Open URL feature of EndNote The Open URL feature allows EndNote version 9 and up to display related record links for a specific record. On the UW-Madison campus this means that Open URL allows records to contain a link to our new
service. Find It provides links from a citation in a database to the full text of that article, if available, and to other helpful resources and services. Records from databases with the FindIT service are imported aong with the record, but will not work until the Open URL feature in EndNote is enabled.
Note: This has no relation to the URL field in EndNote or the Open Link command found on the References menu.
How do I enable Open URL to work with UW-Madison FindIT?
In EndNote go to Edit and Preferences.
- Click on Open URL at the bottom of the left hand menu bar.
- Check the Enable Open URL box if it is not already checked.
- In the Open URL path: box delete any current information and enter the following URL: http://sfx.wisconsin.edu/wisc/
- At the Arguments: box leave all of the information in the box except for one change at the beginning of the information. Change ?sid=ISI:WOS to read ?sid=ISI:endnote
- Click on Apply.
- Click on OK.
Now that it is enabled how do I make it work?
- You must be viewing a record to activate Open URL. The record must be from a UW-Madison licensed database which contains
. - When you are viewing a record click on References and Open URL link.
- A FindIt menu should appear with options for accessing full-text of that article. Note:You may need to click on
at the bottom of the form to initiate the search.
Hint: For records just imported into EndNote you may want indicate that they include the FindIt link. You can do this globally by using the References---Change and Move Fields function. Add the words Open URL .
