Importing WebSPIRS Records into EndNote

There are two methods for transferring records to EndNote. One assumes you are searching the database on the same computer on which EndNote is loaded. This uses the Export feature. The other assumes you do NOT have EndNote on the same computer you use for searching. This uses the Save or Email feature.

Using Export

To use this method EndNote must be loaded on the same computer used to search electronic databases.

  1. Conduct your search
  2. Optional: Mark desired records by clicking in the box to the left of the record.
  3. Click on the Save (disk) icon to the right of the screen..
  4. Click in the radio button next to Export to Procite, EndNote or Reference Manager.
  5. Click on OK.
  6. You may be prompted to open your EndNote library if you have not already done so. You may also be prompted to select an Import Filter. Select RefMan RIS.
  7. Records will be automatically transferred to your EndNote library.

Using Save/Email.

  1. Follow steps 1 and 2 above.
  2. Click on Save or Email Icons.
  3. Select Short Labels from the Field Names With:pull-down box.
  4. If saving records, type your disk drive and filename plus extension .txt in the File name box.
    Example: a:myfile.txt
  5. If emailing records, enter your complete email address in the Send Records to: box.
  6. Click on OK or Send Mail.

If emailing records, you must then save them with a file name from your email program before importing them into EndNote.

Importing Records from SilverPlatter (WebSPIRS) into EndNote

  1. Open EndNote and select your library.
  2. Click on File and Import.
  3. Click on Choose File to choose your downloaded SilverPlatter database file.
  4. Click on Open.
  5. At the Import Option box select Other Filters.
  6. Select the appropriate database name, making sure to choose the SilverPlatter version of your database. e.g. for Agricola you would choose Agricola (SP).
  7. Click on Choose.
  8. CLick on Import.

Your transferred records appear in EndNote. Check them to make sure everything transferred correctly. Now is also the time to do any editing, addition of keywords, etc. To see all the records in your database, select Show All from the Reference menu bar at the top of the screen.

If you have a problem with importing your records

  1. Click on File and Import Filters.
  2. Click on Edit (your database name).

There are several options for editing here. One of the most common problems in importing records is when only one of several records imports.

  1. Click on Record Layout to the left of the screen.
  2. Look at what is selected to see if EndNote is recognizing the separation of records. Smart Identification lets EndNote decide and this is usually successful.
