Searching
- Select a database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
(Optional) Click on OPEN DATABASE SELECTION AREA and select additional databases as desired. - Type a word or phrase in one of the FIND boxes.
(Optional) Change AS, SORT BY, and LIMIT defaults as desired. - Click on START.
Combining Terms
Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.
Example: marijuana or cocaine
Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.Example: drugs and sports
Truncating Terms
Search terms are automatically stemmed. To turn off stemming, use quotation marks around search terms.
Example: condition (retrieves condition, conditioning, conditioner)
Example: "condition" (retrieves condition)
Use * replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.
Example: drug* (retrieves drug, drugs, druggist)
Use ? to replace one character within a search term
Example: wom?n (retrieves woman, women)
Proximity Searching
Use <near/#> to find terms within a specified number (#) of words of each other regardless of the order.
Example: landing <near/1> model (retrieves landing model, model landing)
Use quotation marks around a phrase.
Example: "landing model"
Combining Search Sets
Search sets may be combined.
- Click on SEARCH HISTORY.
- Select the number of the search desired from the SEARCH BUILDER drop-down menu.
- Click on the ADD button.
- Select AND, OR, NOT from the OPERATOR drop-down menu.
- Select another previous search from the SEARCH NUMBER drop-down menu OR type a new word or phrase.
- Click on the ADD button.
- Click on SUBMIT.
Author Searching
- Click on ADVANCED SEARCH.
- Click in the FIND box and type the author's last name and first name.
- From the drop-down menu in the AS box, select AUTHOR, PERSONAL.
- Click on START.

Journal Searching
To find a specific article:
- Click on ADVANCED SEARCH.
- Type article title in the FIND box.
- Select TITLE from the drop-down menu for the AS box.
- Type the journal title or part of the title in the second FIND box.
- Select JOURNAL NAME from the drop-down menu for the AS box.
- Click on START.
To browse a journal:
- Click on JOURNAL DIRECTORY.
- Click on the name of the desired journal.
- Select desired volume or issue.
Displaying Search Results
- Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
- Click on left or right arrows at the bottom of the screen to display more records, or enter a new page number.
- Click on icons beneath the title for FULL TEXT or PDF to view the full article.
- If there is no full text link, click on the FIND IT icon to locate the item electronically, on campus, or to request document delivery.
Selecting Records
- Click on the box to the left of the titled to mark it for later printing, saving, exporting, or emailing.
(Optional) Click on GET MARKED at bottom of screen to see marked records.
Printing Search Results
Printing an Article
- Click on PDF icon to the left of desired article.
- Click on the PRINT icon at top of page image window.
- Click on OK.
Saving Search Results
- Click on PRINT EMAIL SAVE on left hand side of screen.
- Click on + sign next to SAVE OPTIONS.
- Select desired settings. FULL TEXT includes the text of the article.
- Click on SAVE.
- Insert a removable storage device (e.g. flash drive, memory stick, 3-1/2" disk ...).
- Click on FILE at the top of the window and select SAVE AS.
- Type the disk drive letter, the filename, and the extension in the FILE NAME box
- Click on SAVE.

Example: a:myfile.html
Emailing Search Results
- Click on PRINT EMAIL SAVE on left hand side of the screen.
- Click on + sign next to EMAIL OPTIONS.
- Type your email address in the TO box.
- Fill in the SUBJECT box.
- Select desired settings. FULL TEXT includes the text of the article.
- Click on EMAIL.
- Click on OKAY.
- Click on BACK TO RESULTS at bottom of screen to return to previous screen.
Beginning a New Search, Exiting, and Getting Help
Beginning a New Search
- Click on ADVANCED SEARCH.
- Click on CLEAR at bottom of screen to clear previous search.
Exiting
- Click on EXIT PROGRAM at the top right of the screen to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
Getting Help
- Click on HELP for on-screen help.
For further assistance, consult library staff.
