Ask a Librarian

Searching

  1. Select a database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Type a word or phrase in the SEARCH FOR box.
    (Optional) Select a field to search in.
    (Optional) Select subject category or date range.
    Or, type a word of phrase in the TEXT ONLY SEARCH box (e-EROS only)
  3. Click GO.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

  • Example: brass or bronze
Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.
  • Example: iron and steel

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace on or more characters at the end of a search term.

  • Example: fertilize* (retrieves fertilize, fertilizer, fertilized)

Proximity Searching

Use quotation marks to find words next to each other in that order.

  • Example: "controlled release"
  • NEAR searching is not available at this time.

Combining Search Sets

Not available.

Author Searching

  1. Enter the author's last name in the SEARCH FOR box and select AUTHOR from the drop down box.
  2. Click GO.

Chemical Structure or Substructure Searching (eEROS only)

Java Applet will open automatically when you select a structure, substructure or reaction search from a Library computer. See vendor's e-EROS "Getting Started" for requirements and installation instructions for access outside campus libraries.

  1. Select SUBSTRUCTURE or STRUCTURE(EXACT) in the PLEASE CHOOSE dropdown menu.
  2. Draw substructure or structure in Java Applet window.
    (Optional) Click on X to select an element from the periodic table.
    (Optional) Click on A to specify any atom except H
    (Optional) Click on Q to specify any atom except H and C.
    (Optional) Click on L to select a list of elements from the periodic table.
  3. Click on TRANSFER.
  4. Click on BEGIN SEARCH.
  5. Click on RESET to modify structure or substructure query.

Reaction Searching (eEROS only)

  1. Select REACTION (SUBSTR) in the PLEASE CHOOSE drop down menu.
  2. Draw reactant(s), reaction arrow, and product(s) in Java Applet window.
    Note: you must include at least one reactant, reaction arrow, and at least one product.
  3. Click on TRANSFER.
  4. Click on BEGIN SEARCH.
  5. Click on RESET to modify reaction.

Displaying Search Results

  1. Use the SCROLL BAR to move through results.
  2. Click on SECTION TEXT IN HTML. Use <CTRL F> to find your search terms within the text.
    (Optional) Browse the article table of contents.

Selecting Records

Not available.

Downloading Search Results

  1. Insert removable storage device. (i.e. flash drive, memory stick, 3 1/2" disk...)
  2. Click on FILE and select SAVE AS.
  3. Type your disk drive and filename in the FILE NAME box.
    Example: a:\myfile.htm
  4. Click on SAVE to begin downloading.

Emailing Search Results

  1. Click on FILE and select SEND
  2. Choose Page by E-MAIL.
  3. Click the TO box and type the complete email address.
    (Optional) Click in the SUBJECT box and change the subject.
  4. Click on SEND.

Beginning a New Search

  • Click on ADVANCED PRODUCT SEARCH in the menu at the top right of the screen.

Exiting

  • Click on the browser's HOME to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.

Getting Help

  • Click on HELP for on-screen help.
