Ask a Librarian

Searching

  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Type a word or phrase in the entry box.
    (Optional) Click in the radio button to the left of IN ENTIRE ARTICLE CONTENT.
    (Optional) Limit search by date and/or section.
  3. Click on SEARCH.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

  • Example: murder or slaying
Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.
  • Example: murder and knife

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.

  • Example: kill* (retrieves kill, kills, killer, killing-spree)

Use ? to replace one or more characters within a search term.

  • Example: wom?n (retrieves woman, women)

Use ! to replace one or no characters anywhere in a search term.

  • Example: colo!r (retrieves color, colour)

Proximity Searching

Use quotation marks to find words next to each other in that order.

  • Example: "jack the ripper"

Combining Search Sets

Author Searching

  1. Click on ADVANCED SEARCH on the left side of the screen.
  2. Select AUTHOR from the first drop down menu.
  3. Thype the author's name in the search field, in any order, following AU in the Entry box.
    Example: samuel brown

Journal Searching

To find a specific article:

  1. Click on ADVANCED SEARCH on the left side of the screen.
  2. Select ARTICLE TITLE from the SELECT INDEX drop-down menu.
  3. Type in the title of the article enclosed by quotes, following TI in the entry box.
    Example: "ti another murder in the potteries"
  4. Click on SEARCH.

To browse a specific issue of The Times:

  1. Click on BROWSE BY DATE on the left side of the screen.
  2. Select a year from the YEAR drop-down menu.
  3. Select a month from the MONTH drop-down menu.
    (Optional) Select a day from the DAY drop-down menu.
  4. Click on date of desired issue.
    (Optional) Click on BROWSE.

Displaying Search Results

Citations matching the last search are automatically displayed.
OR In Advanced Search, click on VIEW at the bottom of the page.

  1. Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
  2. Click on > or < to display the full record.
  3. Click on the page thumbnail to display the full text of the article.
    (Optional) Click on Article, Page, or PDF 1 page portrait to view the article alone or in context.
  4. Click on BACK to return to the Citations list.

Selecting Records

  1. Click in the radio button to the left of the record to mark it for later printing or emailing.
  2. Click on VIEW MARK LIST on the left side of the screen.
  3. Click on KEEP CHECKED.

Downloading Search Results

Not available.

Emailing Search Results

  1. Display the record to be emailed.
  2. Click on EMAIL OR RETRIEVAL on the left side of the screen.
  3. Type an email address in the E-MAIL ADDRESS box.
  4. (Optional) Type a subject in the SUBJECT box.
  5. Click on SUBMIT E-MAIL REQUEST.
  6. Click on BACK TO CITATIONS to return to the Citations list.

Emailing All Records

Emailing "Marked" Records

Note: This function lets you email a list of citations.

  1. Mark records to be emailed.
  2. Click on EMAIL OR RETRIEVAL on the left side of the screen.
  3. Type an email address in the E-MAIL ADDRESS box.
    (Optional) Type a subject in the SUBJECT box.
  4. Click on SUBMIT E-MAIL REQUEST.
  5. Click on BACK TO CITATIONS to return to the Citations list.

Beginning a New Search, Exiting, and Getting Help

Beginning a New Search

  • Click on BACK TO... SEARCH on the left side of the screen to enter a new search.

Exiting

  • Click on the browser's HOME at the top of the screen to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.

Getting Help

  • Click on HELP for on-screen help.
