Searching

  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Click in the circle to the left of MY BOOKSHELF to search books owned by UW-Madison.
    Or click in the circle to the left of ALL CONTENT to search all records in the database.
  3. Click on ADVANCED SEARCH.
  4. Type a word or phrase in the SEARCH FOR box.
    (Optional) Select specific fields as desired.
  5. Click on SEARCH.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

  • Example: java or php

Search terms are automatically combined with AND

AND narrows your search.
  • Example: practical and technologies

Truncating Terms

Search terms are automatically stemmed. To turn off stemming, use quotation marks around search terms.

  • Example: practical (retrieves practical, practically, practice, practices)
  • Example: "practical" (retrieves practical)

Proximity Searching

The Advanced Search provides phrase searching within full text and provides searching within section titles and code fragments.

Combining Search Sets

Author Searching

  1. Click on ADVANCED SEARCH.
  2. Enter the author's name in the Author box.
    • Example: bill kennedy
  3. Click on SEARCH.

Topic Searching

A SAFARI GUIDE or RELATED ARTICLE may appear in your search results.

  1. Click on ADVANCED SEARCH.
    (Optional) Select a category from the CATEGORY drop down menu.
  2. Click on SEARCH.

Displaying Search Results

  1. Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
  2. Click on the book's title or sections to view a full page.
  3. If there is only a preview for the book, you can request purchase or Interlibrary Loan

Emailing Search Results

  1. Click on a CHAPTER TITLE/ SECTION TITLE
    or browse a book's TABLE OF CONTENTS.
  2. Click on EMAIL THIS PAGE in the line above the book's title.
