Searching
- Click ADVANCED SEARCH on the left side of the screen.
- Type a word or phrase in the SUBJECT/KEYWORD box.
(Optional) Click in a box to LIMIT THE SEARCH TO A FIELD. - Click SEARCH.
Combining Terms
Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.
Example: manufacturing or production
Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.
Example: asphalt and recycle
Combining sets in not available.
Truncating Terms
Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search word.
Example:
Use ? to replace one characters within a search word.

Proximity Searching
Use the EXPERT SEARCH. Use /# to find terms within a specified number (#) of words of one another, in the order given. Use quotation marks around the search terms.

Author Searching
Use the ADVANCED or EXPERT search. Limit to the author field.
Displaying Search Results
The PREV or NEXT buttons at the top of the page move between records in the database, not between records in the search results.
- Click a document number to display a full record.
- Click DOC/RESULTS on the left side of the screen to see a split screen with the full record on top and the results screen below. Use the top scroll bar to see the top of the full record.
- Use the bottom scroll bar to move through records.
(Optional) Click column headings to sort the display results. Results must be fewer than 500 for this to work.
(Optional) Click the single arrow or MORE at the bottom of the page to move to the next page. Click on the double arrow to move to the end of results.
Displaying Full Text Search Results
Full text of most technical papers is available in SAE Digital Library from 1998 to date. Wendt Library has a microfiche and CD-ROM collection of technical papers from 1965-2006. SAE standards are not available full text, although standards are indexed in the database and may be available in Wendt Library. Use Library Express to request technical papers than are not full text.
- Click VIEW DOCUMENT on the top of the full record. You must scroll up to see the top of the record. The VIEW DOCUMENT is present only when the full-text is available.
Selecting Records
Selecting records for later printing, downloading, or emailing is not available.
Printing Search Results
To print a record or a result list you must be viewing the record or list.
- Click PRINT at the top of the SAE screen.
- Click OK.
Saving Search Results
Downloading search results and records is not available.
Downloading Full Text Papers
To download the full text, you must be viewing the full text.
- At the top of the full text window, click on the DISK icon.
- Type your disk drive and filename in the FILE NAME box.
Example: a:myfile.pdf - Click SAVE to begin downloading.
Emailing Search Results
Emailing search results is not available.
