Ask a Librarian

Searching

  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Type a word or phrase in the FULL TEXT or WORDS AND PHRASES box.
  3. Click SEARCH.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: executive or administrator

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: gender and employment

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.

Example: execut* (retrieves execute, executed, executive)

Proximity Searching

Quotation marks are not necessary to find words next to each other in that order. Use near to find terms that appear next to each other regardless of the order. In Contemporary Women's Issues, use near# to terms appear that appear within specified number of words of each other regardless of the order.

Example:women near business (retrieves women business or business women)

  1. Type last name, first name in the FULL TEXT box.
    Example: weisbard phyllis
  2. Click in the circle next to ARTICLE AUTHOR or BOOK AUTHOR.
  3. Click SEARCH.

Journal Searching

To find a specific article (Business & Industry):

  1. Type in article title in WORDS IN TITLE box.
  2. Click LOOKUP... at bottom of screen.
  3. Click desired journal title.
  4. Click ADD SELECTED SOURCES.
  5. Click SEARCH.

To find a specific article (Contemporary Women's Issues):

  1. Type in article title in FULL TEXT box and click on radio button for SEARCH TITLE AND ENHANCED TITLE
  2. Follow steps 2-5 above.

To browse a specific journal:

  1. Click LOOKUP... at bottom of screen.
  2. Click desired journal title.
  3. Click ADD SELECTED SOURCES.
  4. Click SEARCH.

Displaying Search Results

  1. Move through records on the page.
  2. Click NEXT PAGE or PREVIOUS PAGE to display more records.
  3. Click the page icon to left of article title to display the full text of the article.
  4. Click BACK to return to results list.

Selecting Records

  1. Click in the box to the left of the record (s) to mark them for later printing, downloading or emailing.

Saving Search Results

Downloading One Record

  1. Display article to be downloaded.
  2. Insert a removable storage device (i.e., flash drive, memory stick, 3 1/2" disk ...)..
  3. Use browser save function.
  4. Type the disk drive letter, filename, and extension in the FILE NAME box.
    Example: a:myfile.txt
  5. Click SAVE.
  6. Click BACK to return to search results.

Downloading Records.

  1. Click DISPLAY MARKED ARTICLES.
  2. Follow steps 2-6 above.

Emailing Search Results

Emailing One Record

  1. Display article to be emailed.
  2. Click SEND EMAIL.
  3. Type in email address.
  4. Click SEND.
  5. Click on BACK to return to search results.

Emailing Records

  1. Click DISPLAY MARKED ARTICLES.
  2. Follow steps 2-5 above.

Click HOME at the top of the screen to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
