Searching
- Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
- Type a word or phrase in the FULL TEXT or WORDS AND PHRASES box.
- Click on SEARCH.
Combining Terms
Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.
Example: executive or administrator
Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.
Example: gender and employment
Truncating Terms
Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term in Business & Industry.
Example: execut* (retrieves execute, executed, executive)
There is no truncation in Contemporary Womens Issues because the root is automatically truncated.
Example: execute (retrieves execute, executed, executive)
Proximity Searching
Quotation marks are not necessary to find words next to each other in that order. Use near# to find terms within a specified number (#) of words of each other regardless of the order.
Example: internet near3 policy (retrieves policy on the internet, internet office policy)

Author Searching
Business & Industry- Type first name, last name in the WORDS AND PHRASES box.
Example: brad smith - Click on SEARCH.
Contemporary Womens Issues
- Type last name, first name in the FULL TEXT box.
Example: weisbard phyllis - Click on the radio button next to ARTICLE AUTHOR or BOOK AUTHOR.
- Click on SEARCH.
Journal Searching
To find a specific article (Business & Industry):
- Type in article title in WORDS IN TITLE box.
- Click on LOOKUP... at bottom of screen.
- Click on desired journal title.
- Clickon ADD SELECTED SOURCES.
- Click on SEARCH.
To find a specific article (Contemporary Womens Issues):
- Type in article title in FULL TEXT box and click on radio button for SEARCH TITLE AND ENHANCED TITLE
- Follow steps 2-5 above.
To browse a specific journal:
- Click on LOOKUP... at bottom of screen.
- Click on desired journal title.
- Click on ADD SELECTED SOURCES.
- Click on SEARCH.
Displaying Search Results
- Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
- Click on NEXT PAGE or PREVIOUS PAGE to display more records.
- Click on the page icon to left of article title to display the full text of the article.
- Click on BACK to return to results list.
Selecting Records
- Click in the box to the left of the record to mark it for later printing, downloading or emailing.

Printing One Record
- Display article to be printed.
- Click on PRINT at the top of the screen.
- Click on OK.
- Click on BACK to return to search results.
Printing All Records
- Mark all articles.
- Click on DISPLAY MARKED ARTICLES.
- Follow steps 2-4 above.
Printing Selected Records
- Click on DISPLAY MARKED ARTICLES.
- Follow steps 2-4 above..
Saving Search Results
Downloading One Record
- Display article to be downloaded.
- Insert a disk into a drive.
- Click on FILE and SAVE AS.
- Type the disk drive, filename, and extension txt.
Example: a:myfile.txt - Click on SAVE.
- Click on BACK to return to search results.
Downloading All Records
- Mark all articles.
- Click on DISPLAY MARKED ARTICLES.
- Follow steps 2-6 above.

- Display article to be emailed.
- Click on SEND EMAIL.
- Type in email address.
