Searching

  1. Select database for the UW-Madison Libraries web site.
  2. Click SEARCH.
  3. Click search type.

LIGAND Search

All ligand search terms are case sensitive. Ligand names begin with a capital letter and continue with lower case letters. To do a case-insensitive search, type the name in capital letters only.

  1. Click LIGAND.
  2. Enter ligand name.
  3. Click OK.

Example: Methyl glyc retrieves 8 records, including N-Methylglycine, L-S-Methylcysteinylglycine, and N-Acetyl-N-Methylglycine.
      methyl gly retrieves ~70 records.
methyl Gly retrieves~30 records, including Glycyl-L-valine, Glycylsarcosylglycine, Glycine methyl ester.
LEUCINE retrieves ~45 records, including L-thioleucine methylamide and DL-Leucine methyl ester.

Author Search

All bibliogaphy text terms are case sensitive.
  1. Click AUTHOR .
  2. Enter author's last name.
  3. Click OK.
  4. To view additional references, click YES in the AUTHORS More? box.

Formula Search

A formula search is one or more terms separated by spaces. Each formula term is case sensitive. Each formula term usually consists of an element symbol followed by the number multiplier. Formula terms can also be any term in the ligand's name.
  1. Click FORMULA.
  2. Enter complete or partial empirical formula with each element separated by a space.
  3. Click OK.

Example: Co retrieves records containing terms beginning with "Co" like "Phthalein Complexon".
Co1 retrieves records containing one Cobalt atom.
Fe N6 C6 retrieves Hexacyanoferrate (III) ion and Hydrogen hexacyanoferrate (II) [.

BROWSE Search

BROWSE permits viewing related ligands by type. See "Help: Section 14. Table of Parameters for the 'Search...' 'Browse' Menu" for a list of groups of similar ligands.

METAL Search

METAL Search locks the choice of metal ion for subsequent Ligand, Formula, or Browse searches. It is not possible to search directly for a metal ion.

Combining Terms

  1. Enter terms separated by spaces in LIGAND, FORMULA, and AUTHOR searches (See examples above.).
Multi-type searches are not permitted.

Truncating Terms

A ligand name or author search with all letters in lower case will automatically be left- and right-truncated.

A ligand name or author search with the first letter capitalized and remaining letters in lower case will automatically be right-truncated.

Author Example: man retrieves records containing "man" like "Schumann" and "Allmand"..
Man retrieves records beginning with "Man" like "Manchot".

Displaying Search Results and Selecting Records

Displaying Search Results

  1. Click NEXT or PREVIOUS to advance throught the record set.
  2. Click DATA to display stability and thermodynamic constant data.
  3. Click BIBLIOGRAPHY to display data sources.

    Window Color Data Type
BLUE Stability constants; highest protonation constant listed on first page
    RED

    Thermodynamic constants: )H in kcal/mol and kJ/mol; )S given in cal/deg/mole and J/deg/mole.

GREEN Alerts that ligand or metal ion has no critical data with the message "Published data do not meet criteria for critical selection."

Selecting Records

It is not possible to "select" multiple records. Individual records are viewed sequentially.
