Searching

  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Select a database from the NewsBank menu.
  3. Type a word or phrase in the SEARCH box. Use quotation marks around phrases
  4. Click on SEARCH.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: famine or hunger

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: famine and refugees

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.

Example: peace* (retrieves peace, peaceful, peacekeepers, peacekeeping)

Use ? to replace one character with a search term.

Example: wom?n (retrieves woman, women)

Proximity Searching

Use near# to find terms within a specified number (#) of words of each other regardless of the order.

Example: refugees near5 aid (retrieves aid to refugees, refugees in need of aid)

Author Searching

  1. Type last name first name (or first initial) in the SEARCH box.

    Example: annan kofi

  2. Click on DOWN ARROW next to search box and select AUTHOR.
  3. Click on SEARCH.

Displaying Search Results

  1. Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
  2. Click on NEXT or PREVIOUS to display more records.
  3. Click on underlined title of the document to display the full record.
  4. Click on NEXT or PREVIOUS to move to the next or previous record.
  5. Click on LIST to return to the list of results.

Selecting Records

Selecting records for later printing, downloading or emailing is not possible.

Saving Search Results

  1. Display the full record to be saved.
  2. Click on PRINTER FRIENDLY. A new window will open displaying the full record.
  3. Insert a removable storage device (e.g. flash drive, memory stick, 3-1/2" disk ...).
  4. Click on FILE at the top of the window and select SAVE AS.
  5. Delete the default file name in the FILE NAME box.
  6. Type the disk drive letter, the filename, and the extension in the FILE NAME box

    Example:  a:myfile.txt
    Example:  a:myfile.html

  7. Click on SAVE.
  8. Click on FILE at top of new window and select CLOSE to back up.

Exporting Search Results to RefWorks

NewsBank does not allow you to export results into RefWorks. You must manually enter the citation information or cut and paste individual fields.

Emailing Search Results

  1. Display the full record to be emailed.
  2. Click on EMAIL.
  3. Type your email address in the SEND DOCUMENT TO box.
    (Optional) Enter text in the ADD MESSAGE box.
  4. Choose the record format by clicking in the circle next to HTML or ASCII TEXT.
  5. Click on SEND.
  6. Click on OK.

Beginning a New Search

  1. Type new search in SEARCH box at top of screen.
    Or, click on NEW SEARCH or EDIT SEARCH in upper right corner of screen.

Getting Help

  1. Click on HELP for on-screen help.

For further assistance, consult library staff.

Exiting

  1. Click on HOME at the top left of the screen to return to the NewsBank databases menu.
